Harvard University, who was in attendance at the Conference of Seven Na-tions on Alcoholism in Geneva,Switzerland, reportedthat all attending\"spoke the same language\"on thefollowing points: \n1.Nobody is immune to alcoholism but it developsmuch more rapidly with some than with others. \n2.Abstinence from the use of alcohol is the onlysolution to the problem of alcoholism. \n3.General hospital treatment with its varied facilitiesgets better results than the psychiatric hospital. \n\"Most alcoholics are not psychiatric cases,\"he said,\"they are normal people whose drinking has caught upwith them.” \nThe Conference was attended by representatives ofseven nations, the United States,Great Britain,France,Switzerland,Sweden,Denmark and Yugoslavia. It wassponsored by the United Nations. \n# Physiological Factors\n\nIN THE DRINKING LIFECondensed from a Lecture \nBy Andrew C.Ivy,M.D.,Ph.D.,D.Sc. \nTN OUR TEACHING it is important to differenti-Iate between fact and opinion, between fact and inter-pretation. \nMany people know the facts relative to the effects ofalcohol on the human body, the social and economiccommunity, and the public health of the community.Yetthey do not use these facts rightly.Others ignore thefacts, yet others are simply ignorant. \nThe reaction of different individuals as to a stimulusvaries widely. In medicine we find a wide range of suscep-tibility to the various agents, drugs and diseases, and inthe resistance set up by the body in curing itself of adisease. This we call the Law of Variation.Human beingsand animals, alike, vary widely in the range of their sus-ceptibility to the effects of alcohol. This fact explains thevariation found in the figures concerning the concentra-tion of alcohol in the blood that is required,in differentpersons,to cause intoxication. \nIn teaching—or in any effort to understand—it isnecessary, first of all,to define clearly the terms we areusing.Much of the controversy in this field, has grownout of the different understandings that people have ofthe terms used. Therefore,I wish to define the word“Alcohol”from the viewpoint of its general effects onthe animal or human body. \nThis article is condensed from notes of a lecture by Dr.Andrew C.Ivy,Vice President of the University of Illinois,at the National TrainingSchool of the National Temperance League,at Illinois Wesleyan Univer-sity,Bloomington,IIl.,July 19,1951.Dr.Ivy is in charge of the Medicaland other professional schools of the University of Il.,in Chicago.Thenotes were taken by Miss Laura Lindley,Research Secretary,Washington, \nD.C.Miss Lindley was a member of the Yale School of Alcohol Studies, summer of 1943. \n## Anesthetics\n\nAlcohol is an anesthetic, one of the oldest known toman. The first three discovered are alcohol, opium, andhashish or_marihuana.They are analgetics, that is,theykill pain.Ether and chloroform are analgetic and anes-thetic,killing pain and making the person unconscious. \n## Narcotics\n\nSome drugs have a narcotic effect, that is,they stupefy. In this group are opium and its derivatives, morphineand heroin, cocaine, and marihuana. The barbiturates canbecome habit-forming.Alcohol is a narcotic, not only inthe sense that it is stupefying, but also in that it is habit-forming.It is not known how many doses are requiredto produce the habit. We do know that 70%of the chronicalcoholics started drinking in their teen ages, and did notbecome chronic until7 to 20 years
