\nA Northland College(Ashland,Wis.)sophomore sug-gested the answer in a contest editorial last year, whenshe wrote,\"Proving to the average person that alcohol isinjurious to the body is no deterrent;he is more interestedin his social acceptance than in his longevity.”Thuswhile several members of this social group did not them-selves drink, they assumed that drinks would be necessary \nFebruary,1952 \nat their party. And so with the president. They weretrying to gain“acceptance”by the others in the group. But more basic is the answer to the question:Why didthey assume that drinking was necessary for acceptancein the first place? \nTo answer this question,we will recall one of the firstthings we learn in college. It is that the more a learningsituation is reinforced the stronger it becomes. When aninstructor jokingly says,\"Well,I suppose you're alldying to get out of class and go to Joe’s Place,\"or whena college newspaper headline reads STUDENTS DRINKBEER TO PREPARE FOR FINALS,when actuallyonly one student said this in the body of the story, thesuggestion is reinforced and soon accepted. And this isespecially true in the case of impressionable freshmen. \nThe solution?Partly,at least, student leaders,in-structors,college newspaper","cbCaiqybdg4aSHyU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqybdg4aSHyU","pdf",1425245,36,"English","# What's Being Done at the College Level\n## Seeking Social Acceptance\n## ALCOHOLISM IN UPPER CLASSES\n## Alcohol; An Escape from Reality\n### Why Alcoholics Drink","[{\"question\":\"How does the article explain why students who don't drink may still support serving beer?\",\"answer\":\"It argues they seek social acceptance and assume drinking is necessary for group belonging.
