At all. Who wants to be in a maximum-security penitentiary? I’m going to wager nobody wants that. If you are within these walls, you may have made some poor life choices along the way. \nI sure have. \n“Name?” \nA woman in a blue correctional officer ’s uniform is looking up at me from behind the glass partition just inside the entrance to the prison. Her eyes are dull and glassy, and she looks like she doesn’t want to be here anymore than I do. \n“Brooke Sullivan.” I clear my throat. “I’m supposed to meet with Dorothy Kuntz?” \nThe woman looks down at a clipboard of papers in front of her. She scans the list, not acknowledging that she heard me or that she knows anything about why I’m here. I glance behind me into the small waiting area, which is empty except for a wrinkled old man sitting in one of the plastic chairs, reading a newspaper like he’s sitting on the bus. Like there isn’t a barbed wire fence surrounding us, dotted with hulking guard towers. \nAfter what feels like several minutes, a buzzing sound echoes through the room—loud enough that I jump and take a step back. A door to my right with the red vertical bars slowly slides open, revealing a long, dimly lit hallway. \nI stare down the hallway, my feet frozen to the floor.“Should…should I go in?” \nThe woman looks up at me with her dull eyes.“Yes—go. You pass through the security check down the hall.” \nShe nods in the direction of the dark hallway, and a chill goes through me as I walk tentatively through the barred door, which slides closed again and locks with a resounding thud. I’ve never been here before. My job interview was over the phone, and the warden was so desperate to hire me, he didn’t even feel compelled to meet me first—my resume and letters of recommendation were enough. I signed a one-year contract and faxed it over last week. \nAnd now I’m here. For the next year of my life. \nThis is a mistake. I never should have come here. \nI look behind me, at the red metal bars that have already slammed shut behind me. It’s not too late. Even though I signed a contract, I’m sure I could get out of it. I could still turn around and leave this place. Unlike the residents of this prison, I don’t have to be here. \nI didn’t want this job. I wanted any other job but this one. But I applied to every single job within a sixty-minute commute of the town of Raker in upstate New York, and this prison was the only place that called me back for an interview. It was my last choice, and I felt lucky to get it","cbCaikEHZfSBdFeB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikEHZfSBdFeB","pdf",1378048,308,"English","# CHAPTER 1\n## PRESENT DAY\n# CHAPTER 2\n# CHAPTER 3\n# CHAPTER 4\n# CHAPTER 5\n# CHAPTER 6\n# CHAPTER 7\n# CHAPTER 8\n# CHAPTER 9\n# CHAPTER 10\n# CHAPTER 11\n# CHAPTER 12\n# CHAPTER 13\n# CHAPTER 14\n# CHAPTER 15\n# CHAPTER 16\n# CHAPTER 17\n# CHAPTER 18\n# CHAPTER 19\n# CHAPTER 20\n# CHAPTER 21\n# CHAPTER 22\n# CHAPTER 23\n# CHAPTER 24\n# CHAPTER 25\n# CHAPTER 26\n# CHAPTER 27\n# CHAPTER 28\n# CHAPTER 29\n# CHAPTER 30\n# CHAPTER 31\n# CHAPTER 32\n# CHAPTER 33\n# CHAPTER 34\n# CHAPTER 35\n# CHAPTER 36\n# CHAPTER 37\n# CHAPTER 38\n# CHAPTER 39\n# CHAPTER 40\n# CHAPTER 41\n# CHAPTER 42\n# CHAPTER 43\n# CHAPTER 44\n# CHAPTER 45\n# CHAPTER 46\n# CHAPTER 47\n# CHAPTER 48\n# CHAPTER 49\n# CHAPTER 50\n# CHAPTER 51\n# CHAPTER 52\n# CHAPTER 53\n# CHAPTER 54\n# EPILOGUE\n# ACKNOWLEDGMENTS","[{\"question\":\"What is Brooke Sullivan’s situation at the start of Chapter 1?\",\"answer\":\"Brooke Sullivan enters a maximum-security prison and begins her first day working there, feeling trapped and questioning her life choices that led her to accept the job.\"},{\"question\":\"Who does Brooke say she is supposed to meet inside the prison?\",\"answer\":\"Brooke says she is supposed to meet Dorothy Kuntz, who works as a nurse at the prison.\"},{\"question\":\"What security and rules does Brooke encounter when entering the prison?\",\"answer\":\"Brooke passes through security checks, is warned about dress code—specifically told 'no high heels'—and is instructed to proceed through the security area down the hall.\"}]","The Inmate - Chapter 1 - Present Day | PDF",1792703045,474]
