He was married to a young woman from his tribe. It was not until they had both reached old age that the wife gave birth to a child, a son.  \nThe warrior was overjoyed. The next day, he killed a pig and prepared a feast. \"Come and see my new-born  \nson and hear the name I have  \nTwo years later, Maima's mother died, and all the people of the village came to show their respect. Later they took her body to the burial cave, and left her there.  \nBy the time Maima was eighteen, his father's hair had turned grey. One day he took Maima to a place in the forest. He pointed out the landmarks. \"All this land,  \nAs he got near to the place, he  \nheard voices coming from the forest. He rushed through the trees to see who it was that was trespassing on his land. Suddenly, through the trees he saw a group of young women playing and collecting nuts. Maima hid behind a tree and watched.  \nThe sun was setting, and the  \nEarly in the morning, he took his weapons and set off back along the track. But when he got to the place, there was only an old woman there. Maima held his spear and went up to her.“What are you doing on my father’s land? And where are the young women who were here yesterday?\" he demanded. The old woman laughed. \"I am your mother! I died eighteen years ago, when you  \n“But I want to take one of them  \nfor my wife.\"  \n“Very well, this is what you must do. First you must take the skin clothes that they hang on the tree, and throw them into the stream. When the young women go back into the forest at night, the one whose clothes you have taken will be left behind. Make sure she doesn't see you. Creep up  \nThe young woman screamed. Maima jumped back out of her way. She swung around to slash Maima with her magic nails, then realised they had gone. She stood up and looked at Maima.  \n“Only a real warrior could have caught me like that,“ she told him. “I cannot go back to my other life now.
