In Vanity Fair,  the narrator givescomments on Rebecca's father that:  \nHe was a clever man;a pleasant companion;acareless student;with a great propensity forrunning into debt,and a partiality for thetavern.(Thackeray,1962 :22).  \nAs the head of the family,Rebecca's father is expected tofulfill his family's needs.However,he likes to have funin his life,such as,going to the tavern until he becomescareless to his family's economical responsibility.He isaccustomed to being in debts,so that,her family becomespoor.Their poor condition puts them in the lower-middleclass society.Actually,they do not want to be consideredas the lower class people,because Rebecca's father doesnot work in any factory in that earlier nineteenthcentury.Her father's profession is a painter and thedrawing teacher in Miss Pinkerton's school.
