It frames the inquiry as a set of lectures aimed at offering a comprehensive view rather than isolated scholarly findings, while noting the author’s perspective as an “Islamist” rather than a medieval European historian. Major areas include Islamic presence in Europe, commerce and technology, Arab achievements in science and philosophy, and the historical interplay of reconquista and crusade, followed by Europe’s evolving self-awareness.","ISLAMIC SURVEYS 9 \nTHE \nINFLUENCE OF ISLAMON MEDIEVALEUROPE \nW.M ONTGOMERYWATT \nEDINBURGHat the University Press \n◎ W.Montgomery Watt 1972EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY the educated reader somethingmore than can be found in the usual popular books'.Thegeneral idea was that each work should survey some part ofthe vast field covered by Islamic Studies, not merely presentingan outline of what was known and generally accepted, butalso indicating the points at which scholarly debate continued.A bibliography, preferably annotated, was to guide the readerwho wished to pursue his study further. The series hasadvanced more slowly than was hoped, but to judge from thereception of the volumes so far published, the general aimhas been realized fairly well.We have not yet managed toinclude in the series all the volumes we should have liked toinclude, and we have added some that were not originallythought of. \nThe present volume falls into this latter category. When Iwas invited to deliver a series of lectures as visiting professorat the College de France in December I970,a variety ofcircumstances led me to choose the topic of Islamic influenceson Europe.Since lectures of this type are in themselves asurvey of a special field,it seemed not inappropriate to printas it stood the English text from which the French wasprepared. In accordance with the aim of the series, however, there have been added footnotes which contain an annotatedbibliography of the Islamic aspects and some additionalmaterial;but no attempt has been made to give a comparablebibliography for the European aspects, though the main workson which I depended here have been mentioned. The Frenchtext of the lectures and annotations is being published in theRevue des Etudes Islamiques, the first two lectures being invol.xXXIX(1971). \nI am deeply grateful to M.Henri Laoust and the governing \nbody of the College de France for the invitation which gaveme the privilege of lecturing there.I should also like to takethis opportunity of thanking M.Laoust and his colleagues, especially M.and Mme Sourdel and Mme Beldiceanu, for allthe kindness they showed me while I was in Paris.I amindebted to Professors Geoffrey Barraclough of Cambridgeand Gordon Donaldson of Edinburgh for reading and com-menting on an earlier essay on a similar subject, though theyare of course not responsible for the views I have expressed.Mlle Marie-Thérese d'Alverny kindly read the text of thefifth lecture and saved me from a number of errors. \nIn so far as transliteration has been necessary,I have followedthe system used in the other volumes of the series, but as faras possible I have employed the europeanized forms of thenames. \nW.Montgomery Watt \n# THE CONTENTS\n\nONE.Islamic Presence in Europe.IThe
