I have opted to use the spellings of Turkish names that were commonly used by English writers at the time and are likely to be easier for English readers, rather than their Turkish Latin counterparts: thus Abdulmejid instead of Abdülmecid, Durrushehvar rather than Dürrü¸sehvar and Niloufer over Nilüfer. When referring to modern Turkish writers, however, I follow the Turkish spelling.  \nIn the Indian subcontinent in the early twentieth century, a single name could often be transliterated into English in several different ways—sometimes by the same person. I have chosen spellings rather arbitrarily and according to my own preferences—Mohamed Ali rather than Mohammed Ali, for example, or Sayyid Amir Ali instead of Syed Ameer Ali.  \nFinally, during the period in which the book is set, titles and honorifics were often heavily contested—Caliph Abdulmejid, for instance, didn’t renounce his Caliphal title even after the Turkish government said it had stripped him of it.
