Previous research has shown that IXL can have a significant positive impact on students’academic performance (e.g., Copeland et al., 2023; Empirical Education, 2013) . \nThe goal of this study was to examine IXL usage among 3rd-through 8th-grade students in California and its impact on math and English language arts (ELA) achievement, as measured by the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress System (CAASPP) Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) . Using a pretest-posttest control group design, we found1: \n IXL has a positive impact on state assessment performance. Grade cohorts that used IXL Math or IXL ELA outperformed grade cohorts that used any other solution. The more students used IXL, the better their SBA performance. \n1 In all figures: ** indicates significance at the .01 level; * indicates significance at the .05 level; “SP/week” indicates the weekly average number ofIXL skills in which students reached proficiency. \nResearch Report \nThe Impact of IXL on Math and ELA Learning in California \nBackground \nIXL is an end-to-end teaching and learning solution that engages learners in Pre-K through 12th grade with a comprehensive curriculum and personalized recommendations for meeting learning goals. It covers five main subject areas: mathematics, English language arts (ELA), science, social studies, and Spanish. As of this writing, IXL is used by one in four students in the U.S. and by 15 million students worldwide. IXL is deeply rooted in learning sciences research (see Bashkov et al., 2021) and engages each student in a personalized learning experience tailored to their working level. As a result, students work through problems that are neither too easy nor too difficult, which in turn supports their self-efficacy and motivation for continued learning (An & Schonberg, 2024) . \nPrior research has consistently reported significant positive effects of IXL on student learning, including in an independent randomized controlled trial (Copeland et al., 2023). The goal of the present study was to examine the efficacy of IXL across public schools in California. Specifically, we investigated the efficacy of IXL by comparing the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress System (CAASPP) Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) proficiency rates among 3rdthrough 8th-grade cohorts that used IXL Math or IXL ELA to those of cohorts that did not use IXL but likely used a combination of other products. \nStudy Design and Methodology \nRESEARCH QUESTION \nThe present study aimed to examine the following research question for IXL Math and IXL ELA separately: \n Compared to non-IXL grade cohorts, did IXL grade cohorts perform better on the SBA, controlling for baseline performance and key demographic characteristics? More specifically, was higher IXL usage associated with larger learning gains? \nSTUDY DESIGN \nIn this study, we used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design to compare the proficiency rates of grade-level cohorts that used IXL during the 2022-23 school year to the proficiency rates of cohorts that did not use IXL (Figure 1) . \nResearch Report \nFigure 1. Study Design \nDATA SOURCES \nAssessment Data \nAll assessment and demographic data were obtained from the California Department of Education.
