Firmino, meditates on how dark matter and darkness shape material entanglements of Black bodies. Through associative, episodic scenes, an inter-galactic cast interrogates visibility as a political end, asking what it means to be seen—especially from a Black or Brown body—and whether the “wrong question” can be rephrased. The playwright’s note frames the piece as drawn from Everyday Afroplay, linking language-based theatrical writing on Blackness to portrait-series inspiration, collaboration-specific creation, and a “container and compass” fess up to the fact that most of the universe is madeof dark matter? That everything is suspended in an imperceptibleessential blackness we'll never see. \nThe Immeasurable Want ofLight meditates on the material entangle-ments of Black bodies through the poetics of darkness and light. In a series of associative episodes,Daaimah Mubashshir's inter-galactic cast of characters call their bodies into question and troublethe idea that visibility is a political end.Are our bodies inescapable? What are the material realities of these bodies? What are wemade of that isn't already stardust held together by dark matter? What if the question of being seen, from a Black or Brown bodyto the universe,is the wrong question?Or at least, phrased as ithas been—Can you see me for what I am?—will always producethe wrong answer. There's power in the silent gravitational attrac-tion of dark matter. It's a downwards pull,to the depths of darkestspace, deepest ocean,an imperceptible force that's too much todeny. Here's a law for lawless space:there's more nothing thananything after all. \nHow can historically oppressed bodies—those bodies that havehistorically been bought and sold-find their reflections in thestars?I'm reminded of Frantz Fanon's assertion, that \"our only hope.….]is to pose the problem correctly [...]to get man to admit he isnothing, absolutely nothing.\"¹But maybe the stars have a burninghunger for more self.I mean, what is that audacity to burn in thedark,to emit light where there is none?Fred Moten's offering is“Mu,\"to inhabit“nothing itself in its fullness.\"2 There's something \nalluring about the invisible possibility ofdark matter's vastness. The ImmeasurableWant of Light invites us to imaginethe possibilities of emitting no light, sitting contemplatively in the void:\"Gravitational/And black/And heavy.\" \n—AmautaM.FirminoNew Haven 2018 \n1 Fanon,Frantz.Trans.Richard Philcox.BlackSkin,White Masks.NewYork:Grove,2008 \n2 Moten,Fred.Blacknessand Nothingness Afroplay, which began in 2016,is a dailytheatrical writing meditation on Blackness or the blackbody. This practice is a text-based response to ChrisOfli's portrait series Afro Muses,in which depictionsand shades of Blackness are so expansive that anyattempt to define a single identity confutes itself.Ofli's Afro Muses opened a portal to the infinite, thusliberating me to create a cauldron
