The first mate flicked his cigarette into the ocean .“Reveye,” he  \nshouted.“Get up.”  \nHis voice cracked like a whip over the deck of the rust-streaked fishing trawler as he stomped between sleeping bodies, nudging legs and kicking bags. The passengers stirred. A few blinked up at him with red-rimmed eyes, others dragged themselves upright with the mechanical slowness of people used to being told when to move and when to be still.  \nEighteen in all, scattered across the deck, sprawled like loose cargo, curled around each other or stretched out alone, wrapped in old jackets, threadbare blankets, or nothing at all. Couples slept side by side. A mother cradled a baby against her chest. Two teenage brothers huddled under a sheet of plastic. Some had stuffed their belongings beneath their heads for pillows, but all clung to them like lifelines. Their faces were worn, their bodies gaunt, but most slept deeply. Not peacefully, but deeply, as only those who were running from a life of misery could.  \nThe mate stepped over a tangle of limbs, looked down, and paused.  \nA shapely figure lay curled on her side, jacket pulled tight around her, moving, but wanting to remain asleep. Late teens, attractive in a quiet, unpolished way, with dark hair that fell across her face.  \nWhat was her name? Elena? She had barely spoken since boarding. Friendly enough, but shy. Kept mostly to herself. What a waste. If only I had a little more time.  \nHe let his gaze linger until she looked up and caught his leering smile.“Time to get up, Boo.”  \nThe girl quickly turned away. He barked a laugh and continued along the deck, rousting the other passengers.  \nAfter he had gotten them all moving, the mate paused at the railing and lit another cigarette. A sliver of moon hung low in the sky, casting just enough light to sketch silver ripples across the water. To the east, the sky was paling, a soft band of bruised purple that meant dawn wasn’t far off.  \nThe twin diesel engines rumbled low and steady beneath the deck, comfortably vibrating the old steel vessel. Every so often, the shifting wind mixed the scent of salt with the acrid bite of diesel fumes drifting from thevents. The illusion of peace.  \nThe ocean had been kind during their brief voyage. Swells rose and fell like something breathing, lifting the rust-streaked trawler and setting it down again with each rhythmic pulse. How many trips had they made? A dozen at least.
