During the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which usually falls in August or September, many people in China and across Southeast Asia set out steaming plates of food, oranges, and cups of tea on tables in the street. The air smells of incense and roasted meats, and paper decorations flutter in the warm night wind. Why go to all this trouble? People believe that during this month the gates between the living and the dead swing open, and the spirits of ancestors come to visit.
Those open gates are the heart of a tradition that grew from two of Asia's great belief systems. The festival has roots in both Buddhism and Taoism, faiths that took shape more than two thousand years ago. Buddhists connect the month to a story about a monk named Mulian, who is said to have journeyed to rescue his suffering mother, teaching people to honor their parents and elders. Taoists, meanwhile, mark a time when the ruler of the underworld releases spirits to roam the earth for a while. Two different stories, one shared idea: the living should care for those who came before them.
Caring for the dead, it turns out, can be surprisingly generous. Families burn joss paper, sometimes called "ghost money," along with paper models of houses, cars, and even paper cell phones, all meant to give departed relatives comfort in the afterlife. They lay out feasts and leave the very first helping untouched, as an offering to the spirits. In some places, a small amount is set aside for the "hungry ghosts"who have no living family to remember them. It is a bit like leaving the porch light on for a traveler you have never met.
That welcome extends to entertainment, too, and this is where the festival really comes alive. In Malaysia and Singapore, neighborhoods host loud, colorful stage shows called getai, packed with singing, comedy, and flashing lights, as well as traditional Chinese opera. Look closely at the audience and you will notice the front row of chairs sitting completely empty. Those seats are reserved for the spirits, the guests of honor, and no living person would dream of taking one. Can you imagine a concert where the best seats in the house are saved for visitors you cannot see?
Empty chairs and paper gifts might sound like customs from long ago, yet the festival
is thriving right now. Millions of people still observe it each year, and getai performers have swapped some traditional songs for pop hits to draw younger crowds. At its core, the celebration carries a message that never goes stale: remember the people who shaped your life, and treat even strangers with kindness. It isnot a holiday about fear at all, but about gratitude wearing a mysterious costume. And perhaps the most surprising thing is that a festival for ghosts turns out to be one of the warmest gatherings of the year.
The Hungry Ghost Festival
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) Which statement best expresses the central idea of the passage?
A.
