give the plenary lecture at theHumanities Open House this past fall,I broke with the traditionof having that address delivered by a member of the University ofChicago faculty. However,I knew very well that Rich was a specialmember of the community. From his professional vantage point,Richhas long been a close observer and devoted participant in the culturaland intellectual life of this University, the city of Chicago, and thenation. Thanks in part to his advocacy and his generous support, research in the humanities at the University has flourished,partic-ularly through the Chicago Humanities Institute, whose directorholds the title of Barbara E.and Richard J.Franke Professor in theHumanities. \nThe issues Rich Franke discussed in his essay continue to becentral to important conversations being held within the Universityand with our friends in the larger community. At a time when thepublic media are overwhelmed by election-year rhetoric,it is good tostep back and think about broader questions, such as what it meansto be an educated person, what kind of education makes the bestcitizenry, and what role universities have in fostering that education. \nRich Franke reminds us that the humanities are the foundationfor an individual's education at every level:high school, college, andbeyond.Indeed,he urges us to make the humanities part of a life-longcommitment to the well-lived life. \nPR今苏女 \nPHILIP GOSSETTDean,Division of the Humanities \nLibraryWestem Wyoming Community College \nDigitized by the Internet Archivein 2022 with funding fromKahle/Austin
