I knew it even before Doctor Richardson at the county clinic told me, as gently as he possibly could, that things weren’t looking good. I’d waited too long to seek appropriate medical attention. I needed togo to the hospital. I needed to schedule treatment immediately to give myself extra time. Dr. Richardson would help me make that happen.  \nYeah, right.  \nI don’t have insurance. In fact, the bill for the clinic visit, even with the pitiful pittance that is the poor-person discount, will be more than I can afford. What I earn as an afternoon/evening Shop Quick cashier goes to the rent on the one room apartment I share with my twin sister, Donna, who is paralyzed from her waist down. No employee benefits, of course. Well, one benefit is that I occasionally swipe food from the stock room before it’s shelved and slip it into my backpack. I never got caught but once the frozen ground beef started leaking and I had to scrub the pack in the bathtub.  \nWhat a mess.  \nYes, I’ve been shooting heroin for a couple of years. And sure, I’ve shared my stuff and my needles with others when they needed it. I’m not bad. I care about people, you know? But it took me a couple months to figure out what I have.
