Many people don’t know the real answer to this. Youmay believe you’re all caught up on our world’s issues, but a deeperdive may make you think otherwise. Unfortunately, our news outletsdon’t cover everything, sometimes glossing over the most devastatingsituations, just to talk about a celebrity’s newest red carpet look. Manynations are suffering, getting not even the slightest acknowledgementfrom major news channels. One prime example being the current geno -cidein the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Prior to 1997, The Democratic Republic of Congo (also known as Con -go, or even shorter, DRC) was known asthe country of Zaire. Zaire washeavily effected by the Rwandan genocide in 1994, during which manyrefugees from Rwanda fled there. “The influx of refugees destabilizedeastern DRC, bringing an impoverished population, radicalized ideology, and a recent history of extreme violence,” The United States HolocaustMemorial Museum states on their website.
Continued on page 16 | Opinion
Sorry, Incorrect...Students React toIXLBy Christian Bot & Travis Sypniewski, Grade 8
Back and forth, your eyes dart from your score to the submitbutton, like a pendulum. You check your answer once more, butyou remain in doubt. 2 points. Only 2 more points, you think toyourself. You shakingly click submit. The screen flashestheinfa -mous message: “Sorry, incorrect …”
Let's be honest, this has most likely happened to all of us at leastonce and it’s just stressful. One notorious website in particularseems to be the main perpetrator of this anxiety: IXL.
IXL isa subscription-based learning website that is used by manyschool districts. It covers many subjects ranging from Math toSpanish. IXL was created in 1998 by Paul Mishkinin San MateoCalifornia. IXL usesa point system called, “Smart Score,”whichsounds condescending. This implies that having a low Smart Scoremeans you aren’tsmart. IXL’s website states, “SmartScore in -creases for correct answers will be small (1-2 points) and penaltiesfor incorrect answers will be larger (3-8 points) .”
IXL catches the school district's eyes because of how easy itis touse on the teacher's side. What makes it so easy to useisits mul -titude of features; it hasa built-in grading systemaswell as pre -made diagnostic skills, quizzes, and checkpoints.
“I like IXL because it provides standards based practice tosup -plement specific algebraic lessons and concepts. Itis easy andstraightforward to use both asa student anda teacher, and itprovides a large variety of skills based on subject, grade level, andtopic” says Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 teacher, Mrs. Eckrote. Thewebsite also boasts that it increases students' scoreson stateassessments by up to 9%, according to “The IXL Effect.”
This program can cost upwards of $300 per 25 students for oneyear, which is quite a hefty price tag considering there are betterways to teach that are essentially free.
Our major complaint isthe punitive point deductions for incor -rect answers. IXL is seemingly using pressure to motivate the stu -dents, but many students don't appreciate this kind of pressureona daily basis. These setbacks don’t assist in the learning pro -cessand add more stress andanger for those who may bestrug -gling with a topic.
Continued on next page |

A Peek atWhat’s
Get to Know School No. 1’sMr. Owen
Page 3
Opinion
SmartPass Gets MixedReviews
Page 5
Review: Kendra Scott Jewelry IsTrending Among Teens ","cbCailq5Vt8P6cXP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailq5Vt8P6cXP","pdf",5982912,28,"English","# SCHOOL NO. 1 / COMMUNITY
## Opinion
## Review","[{"question":"What is the main argument about IXL in the students’ responses?","answer":"Students describe IXL as frustrating due to punitive point deductions, repetitive drilling, and high time demands that can add stress and reduce focus."},{"question":"How does the article connect IXL use to student motivation and learning?","answer":"The scoring system and difficulty shifts create anxiety for some students, and the repetitive format limits opportunities to apply skills beyond the virtual classroom."},{"question":"What broader global issue does the newspaper opinion section highlight?","answer":"The publication calls attention to the genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo and argues that major news outlets often provide inadequate coverage."}]","The Hornet Highlights - Winter 2024 Issue 26 | PDF",1787791007,43]
