It explains how Georges Méliès created disappearing objects through camera-stop and reshoot techniques, describes the 1922 silent film Nosferatu and its live musical accompaniment, and notes why audiences enjoyed being scared while remaining safe in real life. A man named Georges Melies is showing off his newest trick: a person who suddenly vanishes into a puff of smoke! In the 1890s, Melies discovered that if he stopped his camera, moved things around, and started filming again, objects could seem to disappear or change. These short "trick films" were some of the very first spooky movies ever made.
Melies made things vanish, but soon filmmakers wanted to make a creepy
character you could not forget. In Germany in 1922, a movie called "Nosferatu" put a pale, longfingered vampire on the screen. The film had no sound at all, so a musician often played piano or organ in the theater while the audience watched. Words called "title cards" popped up between scenes to tell you what the characters were saying.
That silent vampire helped open the door for a whole family of monsters made in America. In the 1930s, a movie studio called Universal made films about a vampire named Dracula, a stitchedtogether creature, and a mummy wrapped in bandages. These "Universal Monsters" were so popular that people lined up around the block to buy tickets. The actors wore heavy makeup that could take hours to put on before filming even started.
Those makeup tricks looked great, but new inventions were about to change monster movies forever. At first movies were silent and black-and-white, but then sound was added so you could hear a creaky door or a scream. Later, color made films look more real, and special effects let creatures move in ways that seemed impossible. Compared to Melies stopping his camera by hand, today's computers can build an entire monster that never existed at all.
With all these tools, you might wonder why anyone would want to feel scared on purpose. The answer is that a scary movie lets your heart pound and your hands grip the seat while you stay completely safe. When the lights come back on, the monster is gone and you are still in your comfy chair. From a puff of smoke in Paris to computer creatures today, people have loved that safe, shivery thrill for over a hundred years!
The History of Horror Films
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) Where was Georges Melies making his early trick films?
A.
