Not even close! The idea of paying tobe pleasantly scared is older than your great-great-grandparents. A haunted house attraction is a designed space, sometimes a real building and sometimes a set built inside a warehouse, where actors, props, and clever tricks make your heart pound on purpose. The whole point is a scare you can walk away from, laughing, the moment you step back into the light.
That craving for a safe scare grew out of the ghost stories people loved to tell in the
1800s. Back then, spooky entertainment was everywhere, from candlelit tales at parties to eerie stage shows that used mirrors and glass to make "ghosts" seem to float across a theater. People told stories about creaking mansions and restless spirits, and they enjoyed the shiver those tales sent down their spines. One famous illusion, known as "Pepper's ghost," was shown in London in the 1860s and used angled glass to make a glowing figure appear out of thin air. Audiences gasped, then applauded, because deep down they knew it was a trick.
Those parlor thrills eventually moved out of the theater and into the family home. During the 1930s, many American families threw Halloween house parties, and a popular idea was to lead blindfolded guests through a spooky basement or hallway. Party guides from the time suggested filling bowls with peeled grapes that felt like eyeballs or cold noodles that felt like something worse. It was homemade, low-budget, and unforgettable. Parents partly invented these indoor haunts to keep restless kids busy and out of trouble on Halloween night.
Keeping kids busy soon became a way to raise money, too. By the middle of the twentieth century, clubs, churches, and schools were building fundraising haunted houses, charging a small fee and using the cash for good causes. Then, in the late 1960s, the idea went enormous: Disney opened its Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland in 1969, filling it with special effects that still fool visitors today. One trick uses the very same angled-glass method as Pepper's ghost to make transparent "ghosts" waltz around a ballroom. A one-night basement scare had grown into a ride that millions of people line up for.
So why do we still hand over money to get spooked? The answer is that a good haunted house is really a machine built out of your own senses. Designers dim the lights so your eyes strain, pipe in groans and sudden bangs so your ears jump, and time a surprise for the exact second you relax. Your brain floods with adrenaline, your heart races, and then you laugh, because you were never truly in danger. The oldest trick of all, the one from those 1860s theaters, is still the secret: a scare is most delicious when you know, somewhere in your mind, that it isn't real.
The History of Haunted Houses
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) What is the central idea that ties this whole passage together?
A.
