A trained medical doctor, she wrote landmark works on the oppression of Arab women including Woman at Point Zero (1973), God Dies by the Nile (1976) and The Hidden Face of Eve (1977) . After being imprisoned by Anwar Sadat’s government for criticising the regime, she founded the Arab Women’s Solidarity Association in 1982, before being forced into exile in later life due to death threats by religious extremists. She returned to Egypt in 1996, running for president in 2005 until government persecution forced her to withdraw. Saadawi died in Egypt in 2021. \nContents \nForeword by Joumana Haddad \nPreface to the English Edition \nINTRODUCTION \nPART I THE MUTILATED HALF \n1 The Question that No One Would Answer \n2 Sexual Aggression against the Female Child \n3 The Grandfather with Bad Manners \n4 The Injustice of Justice \n5 The Very Fine Membrane Called ‘Honour ’ \n6 Circumcision of Girls \n7 Obscurantism and Contradiction \n8 The Illegitimate Child and the Prostitute \n9 Abortion and Fertility \n10 Distorted Notions about Femininity, Beauty and Love \nPART II WOMEN IN HISTORY \n11 The Thirteenth Rib of Adam \n12 Man the God, Woman the Sinful \n13 Woman at the Time of the Pharaohs \n14 Liberty to the Slave, But Not for the Woman \nPART III THE ARAB WOMAN \n15 The Role of Women in Arab History \n16 Love and Sex in the Life of the Arab \n17 The Heroine in Arab Literature \nPART IV BREAKING THROUGH \n18 Arab Pioneers of Women’s Liberation \n19 Work and Women \n20 Marriage and Divorce \nAn Afterword Notes \nForeword \nThe Lost Face ofAdam \nAllow me to set the tone of this text right from the start: It is not the literary tone of the author, not the analytical tone of the journalist, and surely not the scholarly tone of the academic. It is not even the enthused, naively optimistic activist’s tone. It is, plainly and simply, the angry tone of an angry woman. This is how I would like these words of mine to be read and heard: with anger as their soundtrack. The soundtrack of our downtrodden Arab women lives. \nHow could I, how could we not be angry? As angry today as we were decades ago — and on some levels, even more now than before; from Lebanon to Egypt, from Sudan to Syria, and beyond, we are plagued with a systemic discrimination that consistently gnaws at our dignities and rights as women. And nothing appears to put a decisive, clear-cut stop to it. Especially not books – and oh, how well, how sadly we writers know that. Not all the demonstrations, advocating, pressures or even laws that have been, or are being, marched, made, exerted, passed. All of these end up amounting to a plain, disappointing, often heart-breaking anaesthesia. They might increase the wider public’s awareness about the situation, but few in that made-aware public would consider the ‘situation’ for what it really is, i.e., a terrible injustice, and do something about it, or even want to. Formost, ‘it is what it is’, and there is no crueller verdict out there. And whenever and wherever outcries, efforts and legislations do slow down the course of the ongoing tragedy, soon the latter jumps back meaner and stronger. We have seen it happen, this backlash, in more than one place. \nThe world seems inevitably — and self-indulgently — stuck in its macho, patriarchal Cave. \nAnd why wouldn’t it be? It is, after all, a Man’s world, and asking Man to leave the Cave means asking him","cbCaijPLUOs3tGdH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijPLUOs3tGdH","pdf",2034739,318,"English","# Introduction\n## Part I The Mutilated Half\n## Part II Women in History\n## Part III The Arab Woman\n## Part IV Breaking Through\n# Foreword\n## Lost Face of Adam","[{\"question\":\"What overall tone does the foreword set for the text?\",\"answer\":\"The foreword emphasizes an explicitly angry tone, meant to be heard with anger as its “soundtrack,” reflecting the lived experiences of downtrodden Arab women.\"},{\"question\":\"What central problem does the author argue remains unresolved despite activism and laws?\",\"answer\":\"Systemic discrimination continues to gnaw at women’s dignity and rights, and setbacks quickly return even when demonstrations, pressures, or legislation slow the tragedy.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the book say about the relevance of The Hidden Face of Eve decades after its first publication?\",\"answer\":\"It argues that the book is still “to the point,” because the injustices it describes remain alive, well, and especially pertinent in the Arab world.\"}]","The Hidden Face of Eve - Dedicated to Zeinab Shoukry | PDF",1792016692,490]
