Dr. Cynthia and other doctors and activists feared for their safety, so they hid in the jungle.  \nOnce the sun went down, they continued their trek to Thailand.  \nAlong the way, they met sick people who had never seen a doctor.  \nDr. Cynthia and her friends were committed and resourceful.  \nThey helped however they could with whatever they had.  \nAll Dr. Cynthia had in her bag was a scalpel, a stethoscope, and a thermometer.  \nIt took them seven days to reach Thailand.  \nWhen she reached Thailand, Dr. Cynthia met many refugees like herself.  \nThey had many different injuries and illnesses, and they had very little money.  \nDr. Cynthia wanted to help, so she opened a clinic in Mae Sot,  \na town on the border between Thailand and Burma.  \nAt first, the clinic operated out of a rundown concrete house with dirt floors.  \nDr. Cynthia cleaned the few medical tools she had in a rice cooker .  \nShe and her team lived simply and worked hard.  \nThey provided free treatment to patients, who were mostly students and young people with malaria, diarrhea, and gunshot wounds.  \nMany years later, Dr. Cynthia is well-known .
