I recalled the pressure in my back followed by that agonising tumble down the stairs, then that hideous crack. Now I was locked in a moment of absolute stillness. All sounds had ceased along with the beating of my heart. I could feel nothing, see nothing, hear nothing. The moment was so empty it was as though I no longer existed.  \nThen I could see again. The grey sky was turbulent, snow gently falling around me, but I couldn’t feel the cold. Slowly I sat up. Rather than the expected pain, I experienced such a wonderful lightness, as if I could float away on the air with the snowflakes.  \nI got to my feet with seemingly no effort. One moment I was on the ground, the next I was standing. I looked down to see a crumpled thing lying on the cobblestones at the foot of the stone stairs that led up to the balcony on the first floor. It wore my dress and my rings adorned its fingers, two of which were bent the wrong way, but because of its position I could not see its face.  \nLooking down at my own hands, they were still small and delicate; only they were faded, as though the light played through them, as were the jewels in my rings, their brilliance gone. Was it some strange optical illusion? The day was overcast but there was no mist or fog, nothing that  \ncould create that impression. Numbness and confusion had enveloped me. Was this a dream? Yes, that was the only thing that made sense.  \nSomeone stood at the top of the stairs peering down at the crumpled figure before they vanished through the door leading back into the house. Who it was I could not tell. They’d been cloaked, their face hidden.  \nI looked back at the thing on the ground and reached out a shaky hand to touch it. I screamed with horror when my hand passed right through it, like touching air.  \nA door leading into the house opened and I cried out with relief when I saw it was my brother, Lawrence. At twenty-two, he was four years older than me and we had always been very close, especially as we were the only surviving children and had together watched our six siblings die of illness or accident. He was one of the people I loved most in the world, one of my greatest friends as well as my protector.  \nI expected him to rush to me and take my hand but instead he fell down beside the crumpled body, crying out my name. I watched in horror as he pulled it into his arms, the head lolling back at an appalling, unnatural angle.  \nI tried to get Lawrence’s attention, but he couldn’t hear me. I reached out to touch his hand, desperate to reassure him that I was well, but my hand went through him too.  \nMy scream echoed loudly in my ears, but Lawrence didn’t seem to hear it or even notice me.
