Riya’s family learns she is living with depression—an illness that can bring sadness, fatigue, and loneliness. With support from caring adults and ongoing check-ins, Apoorvi tries practical, heartfelt ways to brighten Riya’s days, while Riya also begins meeting a school counselor for guidance and help.","The Happiness Project \nWritten by Olivia Wood Illustrated by Amit Mohanta English \nThe Happiness Project \nEnglish \nSIL LEAD \nLanguage, Education, and Development \nCopyright © 2021, Ashoka and Worldreader \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/)[ ](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/)[You may not use this work for commercial purposes. They would play hide and seek. And when they got a little older, they shared the same books and clothes. \n“My sister is my best friend.” Apoorvi would think, sitting next to her at dinner. \nBut one year Riya changed. She stopped wanting to play, and talk, and laugh. She was always looking down at the ground. And she spent a lot of time alone in her room. \n“What’s wrong with Riya?” Apoorvi asked her mother. \nApoorvi’s mother seemed sad, and she gave Apoorvi a big hug. \n“Riya has depression. Depression is an illness that makes you feel very sad, and tired. It can make you feel lonely, even when you are surrounded by family and friends.” \n“But what can we do to help her?” Apoorvi asked. She felt ready to do anything. \nThat night at dinner, Apoorvi’s father asked Riya to tell them about how she was feeling. Everyone listened to her, and tried to cheer her up. \n“We will love you and help you no matter what,” he said. \nAfter this, Apoorvi asks her sister how she is feeling all the time. When she is sad, she tries to make her day better. \nShe brings her sweet treats, or takes her outside for a walk in the sun. Sometimes this helps Riya. But it doesn’t always. \nRiya starts to go see the school counselor, Miss Anika. Miss Anika’sjob is to help students who are having a difficult time, to listen to them and give them support.","cbCaihhM2hGNmAwm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihhM2hGNmAwm","pdf",4177108,27,"English","en",105,"# The Happiness Project\n## Discovering Depression\n## Helping Riya Day by Day\n## Meeting the School Counselor","[{\"question\":\"What changes in Riya after one year?\",\"answer\":\"Riya stops wanting to play, talk, and laugh.
