The narrative traces the object’s journey from being manufactured in a factory in inland China, grouped with other hammers, and packed into sealed boxes. It then describes transport by van to an airport, flight to a coastal port, loading onto a container ship, arrival in Douala, onward shipment by train and lorries to Bamenda, connecting everyday life with global supply chains.","The Hammer \nEnglish Fiction \nThe Hammer \nWritten by \nCarol Smith \nImages by Tony Smith. \nEnglish \nUnited Kingdom \nCopyright © 2020, SIL Cameroon \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)[ ](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)[You may not use this work for commercial purposes. The handle was clean and smooth, the head was shiny, it was a good hammer. He noticed that on the end it said, ‘MADE IN CHINA’. \n“I wonder”, thought James,“how that hammer got all the way from China to here”. \nIf the hammer could have talked, it would have told James how it was made in a factory in inland China and put with 23 other hammers into a box and sealed up. Then lots of boxes were strapped together and using a fork lift truck were put into a van which delivered them to the local airport. \nFrom the local airport the boxes were flown to the big port on the coast of China and packed with other boxes into a container which was then loaded onto a container ship using an overhead crane . The ship took several weeks to sail to Douala in Cameroon . \nWhen the ship arrived in Douala the containers were unloaded and put onto a train. The train travelled through the night until it reached Yaounde. \nIn Yaounde the containers were moved from the train onto individual articulated lorries. One lorry then made the journey to Bamenda.","cbCailbaNTQXrXn7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailbaNTQXrXn7","pdf",1342895,18,"English","en",105,"# The New Hammer\n## James’ Question\n## Inside the Supply Chain","[{\"question\":\"Why does James feel curious about the hammer?\",\"answer\":\"James notices the marking “MADE IN CHINA” and wonders how the hammer reached his place from China.\"},{\"question\":\"How is the hammer first prepared and grouped for shipping?\",\"answer\":\"It is made in a factory, then placed with other hammers into a box that is sealed.\"},{\"question\":\"What transportation steps are described after the hammer leaves China?\",\"answer\":\"Boxes go by van to an airport, are flown to a port, then shipped by container ship to Douala and carried onward by train and lorries to Bamenda.\"}]",1784314737,28,{"code":4,"msg":29,"data":30},"ok",{"site_id":23,"language":22,"slug":31,"title":13,"keywords":32,"description":14,"schema_data":33,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":26},"the-hammer-read-story","",{"@graph":34,"@context":84},[35,52,67],{"@type":36,"itemListElement":37},"BreadcrumbList",[38,42,46,49],{"item":39,"name":40,"@type":41,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":43,"name":44,"@type":41,"position":45},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":41,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":41,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-hammer-read-story/92291/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":22,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":39,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-22","2026-07-17",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":11},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"Why does James feel curious about the hammer?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"James notices the marking “MADE IN CHINA” and wonders how the hammer reached his place from China.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"How is the hammer first prepared and grouped for shipping?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"It is made in a factory, then placed with other hammers into a box that is sealed.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"What transportation steps are described after the hammer leaves China?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"Boxes go by van to an airport, are flown to a port, then shipped by container ship to Douala and carried onward by train and lorries to Bamenda.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":23},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,95,99,103,108,113,118,123,128,131,135],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},90,"story-novel",{"id":45,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":127},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":126,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":130},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":132,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":133,"show_sort_weight":132,"slug":134},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":136,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":137,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":138},19,"General","general"]
