TheGutenbergBible\n\nWhen the Gutenberg Bible was produced five centuries ago,it was the realization of the dream of the pioneering printerwho gives it its name. While little is known about the lifeof Johann Gutenberg,it is clear that his ambition was toproduce fine liturgical books through the means of movabletype, books which could compete in beauty with the prod-ucts of the highly developed art of the manuscript. That theGutenberg Bible is the finest example of printing of all timeis a widely held opinion among many experts and increasesour appreciation of the genius of Gutenberg and the perfec-tion of his invention. \nIt is estimated that one-hundred-and-fifty copies of the two-volume Bible were printed on handmade rag paper.Perhapsthirty-five additional copies were printed on vellum.Of theforty-six copies which still exist,twenty-two are complete, the remainder incomplete. In the United States of Americathere are six complete Gutenberg Bibles, located at theLibrary of Congress(on vellum),Yale,Harvard, the PierpontMorgan Library, the General Theological Seminary, and ina private collection. The seven incomplete copies hereinclude those at the Henry E.Huntington Library and theNew York Public Library. \nThe Very Rev.Eugene Augustus Hoffman,D.D.Donor of the Gutenberg Bible. \n# The\n\nGeneral TheologicalSeminary Copy \nThe General Theological Seminary copy was acquiredin 18g8 when the Offenburg-Syston Park-Makellar copy cameup for auction at Sotheby's,the famous English gallery.DeanEugene A.Hoffman instructed Bernard Quaritch, then theleading book dealer in Europe,to purchase it.Quaritch wonthe volume at$15,000.00,and the Dean was enabled to presentit to the Seminary.Dean Hoffman and Mr.Cornelius Van-derbilt had presented the great Copinger collection of LatinBibles in 1893,continuing a tradition established by Mr.John Pintard, who gave many fine Bibles to the Seminary inthe first years of its history. The gift of the Gutenberg Bibleis the outstanding event in the history of the Seminary'sexceptional collection.Mr.Quaritch,in sending the Bibleto Dean Hoffman, expressed his hope that “the great prize...will for centuries to come receive, and bestow, honour onthe shelves of your library.” \n# The Forged Leaf\n\nIn 1916,Mr.Joseph Martini,a New York book dealer, madea detailed collation of the Bible and detected one forged leafin volume two. This leaf carried part of Chapter 14,all ofChapter 15,and a part of Chapter 16 of Ezekiel. The bookhad been sold “with all faults”.It was impossible to knowwhen the forged leaf was bound into the volume, and thechances of replacing it seemed beyond realization. In thefall of 1953,something close to a miracle happened.A gener-ous friend of the Seminary gave a copy of the missing leaf tothe institution, and the Seminary's great Bible became thefirst imperfect Gutenberg Bible ever restored to completeness. The substitute leaf was taken from a defective copy of volumetwo, which was being broken up for sale in parts and leaves. \nThe inscription inthis capital reads\"Bernhard Siberchoralis zu Offen-burg anno domini1601.” \nLittle is known of the early history of the Seminary's Guten-berg Bible. There are several signatures with dates written inthe blank centers of some of the large capitals. Two of
