As an extended narrative, the novel differs from the short story and from the work of middle length called the novelette; its magnitude allows a myriad variety of characters, greater complication of plot (or plots), wider development of milieu and more sustained explication of characters and motives than do the shorter and more concentrated modes. Our response to a 'novel' may be or seem to be personal. Certain characteristics of vigour, profundity, beauty or 'truth to experience' strike us and the novel occupies a special place in our mind. There are certain literary factors that we should know if we are to comprehend a novel properly. What is/was the background and milieu of the author? what is/was his theory of literature?; the theme, plot, structure and rhetoric of the novel; its characters, symbols and archetypes; its tone and texture; and its use of language. For the life of the novel is not, merely 'personal', it is more like a tripartite dialogue, between an author living 'then' or ' now', a reader living 'now' and whatever forces of survival connect the two. Criticism is the public manifestation of this dialogue, a witness to the continuous power of literature to arouse and excite. \nStudents should develop a habit of reading good novels and learn to interpret and critically appreciate them. Francis Bacon has very aptly said,\"Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man and writing an exact man\" . Studying good literature not only provides pleasure but also broadens the horizon of our knowledge and improves our mind. The more we read and discuss, the better are our minds adapt to communicate, interpret and express. \nR.K. Narayan's The Guide presents a panoramic perspective of the subtleties and intricacies of human life in a very lucid manner and has a universal \nappeal. The gripping style and theme of the novel make an inquisitive appeal to the mind of the young readers. \nThe present book provides an introductory note to the author, theme and narrative technique of the novel in brief, the main events of the novel and a brief sketch of the characters to enable the students to comprehend the novel. Students should be able to grasp the contents of the novel thoroughly. For this purpose, short and long comprehension questions and composition exercises have been included. While comprehension exercises aim at helping the students to understand the text; composition exercises intened to bring out the creativity in them. \nSuggestions from the teachers and students to improve this book are welcome. \nDr. SAVITA GOEL \nDr. ANIL KUMAR DADHICH \nCONTENTS \nSr. No. Lesson Page \n1 About the Author 1 \n2 Theme and Narrative Technique 2 \n3 Main Events in The Guide 3 \n4 Characters in The Guide 8 \n5 The Guide 13 \n6 Questions 208 \n7 Composition 221 \nINTRODUCTION \nAbout The Author \nR.K Narayan , one of the distinguished contemporary Indian writers in English, was born in 1906 in Madras (now Chennai ) and educated at the Collegiate High School in Mysor","cbCaikGGsyTzJfqG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikGGsyTzJfqG","pdf",2700527,229,"English","# PREFACE\n# INTRODUCTION\n## About The Author\n# CONTENTS","[{\"question\":\"What does the book mean by a “novel,” and what should students learn to comprehend it?\",\"answer\":\"A novel is described as an extended fiction work in prose with greater variety of characters, complication of plot, and sustained development.
