Edition\n\nTHIs book has been written in response to a request for a newedition of my Caravans of the Old Sahara. It covers the same fieldand tells much the same story, but not in quite the same way. There are several reasons for this. \nFirst,I found the mere revision of what I wrote a quarter ofa century ago humiliating and tedious. There was too much thatshould have been written better, and not a little that should nothave been written at all.In the meanwhile, too,I had gatherednew material much of which had to be used,if only to show howwrong some of my earlier conclusions had been. The need torewrite the whole book was plainly inescapable. \nBut more than that was required. The passage of years hadbrought changes which seemed to call for a different treatmentof the subject,a new approach to the story. The purpose of myCaravans was,as the Preface said,to show how the trans-Saharantrade routes had woven ties of blood and culture between thepeoples north and south of the desert, and to win a measure ofrecognition for the part which the Western Sudanese have playedin the history of civilization. The emphasis was on the influenceof the peoples of the north on those of the interior,of the whitesand browns on the blacks. The book was conceived in Kano, looking northwards across the great wastes of the Sahara towardsthe teeming cities of Barbary with which the Western Sudanesewere linked by ties forged over the centuries. The book was con-sequently addressed primarily to those interested in West Africa. \nSince then I have become better acquainted with Barbary, from Marrakech to Lepcis, and with its literature. My modesttravels and my reading have taught me much, especially that theSahara dominates the history of the north not less than that ofthe south. But this ascendancy is little recognized by the historiansof Barbary, and not at all by the masses who gaze enthralled atthe splendour of the ancient monuments with which that aridland is strewn. \nThere seemed to me a need for a book showing how the Saharaenriched the Carthaginian and bewildered the Roman;how in \nlater times the great caravan routes, linking the sophisticatedcities of the north with the great markets and modest seats oflearning of the south, not only influenced the course of events inBarbary, and even beyond, but sometimes determined it;how, all down the centuries,Berbers and Arabs,Jews and Christians, never ceased to draw on the wealth and industry of the Sudanese. This book seeks to satisfy that need. \nThe history of North Africa has engaged many illustriousscholars some of whom have made its study their life's work.Thisincursion into a field in which I have had so many distinguishedpredecessors has therefore been undertaken with humility, butnot so humbly that I have not sometimes dared to question theconclusions of the great. \nAlthough th","cbCaik5V8bTGsxZ3","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaik5V8bTGsxZ3","pdf",19687992,332,"English","# Preface to First Edition\n##
