with them their mer-chant skills and their businesses,including the diamondindustry,which has remained a famous and central part ofthe city's commerce.  \nThe growing city bustled in many other ways.A varietyof churches and other houses of worship were built duringthis time.Traders and craftspeople of all sorts began settingup protectionist guilds,and there was an increase in interestin the arts and sciences.Artists,including Rembrandt,wereworking overtime,cranking out paintings commissioned bynewly affluent merchants who had become obsessed withportraying themselves and surrounding themselves withbeautiful images.It is thought that most affluent Dutchhomes had at least four paintings in them at that time.  \nOver the next 65 years Amsterdam grew into one ofthe world's great cities.In 1602,traders from each of themajor cities in the Republic of the Seven Provinces set upthe Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie(V.O.C.),theUnited East India Company,which was granted a
