It explains that the English translation reflects seventeenth-century language, with spelling modernized and minor, largely verbal, revisions made to keep the rendering appropriate for devotional readers. It also surveys the book’s “Stimuli Amoris” tradition and notes its authorship attribution and esteem by saints and devotional 厂OLOGYAT CLARLIMONTCalifornia \n# PREFACE\n\nA FEw years ago an old copy of\"The Goad ofDivine Love”came into my possession.Asit was imperfect(a number of leaves wanting)Imade repeated endeavours to find one that wascomplete. But so rare, apparently, had the bookbecome that only from the British Museum couldI obtain the text of the missing pages.Theedition now offered agrees almost entirely withthat published at Douai in I642.The quaintrendering is reproduced, but the spelling has beenmodernized, and a few unimportant and mostlyverbal changes have been made. The translationis in the English of the seventeenth century. At that epoch our language had words andexpressions in common use which nowadayswould hardly be permissible.Of these some fewI have eliminated altogether, and the rest I havetoned down that there might remain nothingoffensive to pious ears. The title of the bookseems to have been a favourite one with asceticalwriters, for several\"Stimuli Amoris\"werewritten or compiled between the declining yearsof the thirteenth and the middle of the sixteenth \ncenturies.This is,however,by far the mostfamous of them all,and is found in manyMSS.of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.Although,as a compilation,it belongs to thefourteenth,it includes nearly the whole of a“Stimulus Amoris”written in the precedingcentury. It has frequently been published withthe works of St.Bonaventure, and (mainly,per-haps,on that account)came to be very generallyattributed to him.It appears, however, ratherto have been founded on and inspired by thesayings, the spirit, and the teaching of theSeraphic Doctor than to have come directly fromhis pen.The author of the incorporated treatisewas Brother James of Milan, who,in the prologueto a MS.of about A.D.I300,is expressly saidto have written it.But beyond the fact that hewas a devoted member of the Franciscan Order, and flourished in the second half of the thirteenthcentury, little or nothing is known of him. \n\"The Goad of Divine Love\"has ever beenheld in high esteem by Saints and devout persons. There is a note,in an antique hand,on themargin of one of the MSS.,which says:\"In myopinion this book may be called the book of life, and a compendium of the compendiums of thewhole doctrine of beatitude.\"Louis of Granadacompared it to the Meditations of St.Augustine, and St.Francis de Sales called it\"most ex-cellent.”Some
