In the inky darkness, pools of lamplight fell onto the platform. There were children everywhere, looking bewildered. Mothers cried and fathers told their children to be brave. Heike, only five, was already asleep on the seat Dagmar had found for her. Dagmar, ten, stood atthe train window. Outside on the platform stood her mother, pale and silent, and her father, speaking through the train window with a quiet intensity.  \n‘You are the responsible one, Dagmar,’ he said.‘When you arrive in England, you must write and tell us where to find you. Then, write to the refugee committee and say that we must join you. Do this for us, Schatzi, so that our family will be together again. And you must keep a close eye on your sister. You understand? Only you can do this.’  \n‘Yes, Vati, I will,’ Dagmar replied. ‘I promise.’ Her heart beat rapidly and she repeated the instructions to calm herself.  \n‘Wir haben dich lieb,’Vati said, putting his hand on her cheek. ‘We love you. Ja?’  \nDagmar nodded.  \n‘Be brave, mein Schatzi,’ her mother said and reached out to her.  \nDagmar took her mother ’s hand through the window. ‘I will, Mutti,’ she said, her voice shaking with tears she commanded not to fall. Her father took Dagmar ’s other hand and, for just a moment, she thought her parents  \nmight pull her out through the window into their arms. But then the train lurched and her parents let go, their arms flying up as if in surrender.  \nAs the train pulled out of the station, Dagmar leaned far out of the window, watching until the pool of light became a pinpoint and her parents were swallowed by the darkness.  \nShe sank into the seat next to her younger sister, breathing hard as if she’d just run a race. Heike slept on, her feet braced against Dagmar ’s thigh and her hand clutching the identification tag she wore round her neck on a string. They all had them, but Dagmar ’s hung straight and uncreased.  \nChildren, suddenly free from constraint, ran up and down the centre aisle through the carriages as if they were on holiday. A few kept to their seats, weeping and being comforted by the grown-up chaperones. Dagmar kept her tears to herself, drying her eyes on her sleeve.
