wrote the following after attending the AfghanWomen's Summit in Brussels,Belgium,on December 4 and 5,2001.See the European Women Lobby Web site athttp://www.womenlobby.org/home-asp for the full text of theresulting document, the Brussels Proclamation.—EDS. \nl am on an airplane leaving Brussels, where I have been for thelast four days at the Afghan Women's Summit. The sky is pink, shattering pink.I remember someone once telling me that pinkwas a crucial color,as it is the color of healing. \nI wanted to write down some thoughts,so that you couldshare these last extraordinary days in Brussels. They have beenmiraculous, productive, and full of extremes.I think that, whenpeople have suffered for a long time, they learn how to cope, manage, and contain. It is only later, when kindness or safetycomes, that they are able to experience their suffering. This sum-mit allowed Afghan women to collectively experience their terri-ble years of oppression, and to find their voices and dreams forthe future. The summit was, first of all,a gathering.I mean thatin the deepest sense—a gathering,a joining,a building. \nForty Afghan women came from countries all over the world, including Afghanistan,Iran,Pakistan,Kyrgyzstan,Tajikistan,Russia,Germany,France, the Netherlands,Switzerland, theUnited Kingdom, the United States,Canada, and Australia.Theycame with a common purpose and project—to let the world knowwhat they wanted and needed for the future of their country.Mostof these women had never met before.Even the women frominside Afghanistan were strangers to one another,as travel is sodifficult and women were so isolated under the Taliban. On thefirst day, women shared amazing stories—stories of survival, subversion, and brilliance. One woman who was a teacher toldof how she asked students to always keep the Koran on top oftheir desks. They would study every other kind of subject.Whenshe saw the Taliban approach, she would quickly tell them to turnto page 15 of the Koran and read.Another participant had orga-nized fifty women in resistance—her community had been leftdefenseless after its men had either gone off to fight or had beentaken by the Taliban.Any time the Taliban approached to harmthem, the women would stand on their roofs and pour buckets ofboiling water on their attackers'heads. \nThere were also about twenty-five non-Afghan human rights \nactivists at the summit from Belgium,Croatia,France,India,Italy.Jordan,Morocco, the Netherlands,Pakistan,Palestine,Somalia,Tajikistan,Tunisia,Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the UnitedStates(including our own executive director,Willa Shalit).Thesewomen had come to show solidarity with the women ofAfghanistan. Many were there from war-torn countries them-selves,so they had practical experience to share. One activist,Maha Abu-Dayyeh Shamas, arrived on a day when there werebombings in her own country.Although she was deeply worriedabout her family and friends, she stayed at the summit anddevoted herself to the Afghan women. \nDuring the three days, there were meetings and meals,can-vassing,workshops,tears,and dancing. The Afghan women meton their own, superbly chaired by Judge Navanethem Pillay ofSouth Africa, and facilitated by Hibaaq Osman of the Center forStrategic Initiatives of Women. The women were from diverseethnic, class, age, tribal, and political backgrounds. There werehuge chasms to cross, and there were dangerous turns in theroad. What most impressed me was the Afghan women's hungerfor community and unity, the willingness in each woman to reachover the places of difference and go deeper into their commonhumanity. It was a result of their reaching and great thinking thatthe excellent Brussels Proclamation was born. These Afghanwomen proved what women prove again and again—that, because our interests are not primarily focused on gaining andmaintaining ","cbCaieoJbqFE4feZ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieoJbqFE4feZ","pdf",2972639,"English","# The Future of Women in Afghanistan\n## Summit
