The Future of the University:A Contingency Analysis ofProfessors'Perspectivest\n\nMANUEL CRESPO*and DORIS ACEVEDO** \n## Abstract\n\nWithin the framework of contingency theory, the impact of environmental andorganizational variables on professors'perspectives on the future of theuniversity is analyzed. The sample consists of 1225 university professors of allQuébec universities who answered a survey questionnaire in the fall of 1984and the winter of 1985.More than two thirds of respondents (76,2%)advocatea greater selectivity in university admissions.A majority(55,4%)agree with amarket orientation of universities.Approximately 90%are in favour of thesearch for non-governmental funds.Almost two thirds (63,7%)think that lessviable departments should be protected.A strong majority (80,7%)support aclosing of the technological gap of Québec society.Finally,80%favour greateruniversity autonomy.Regression analyses show that area of specialization ofdepartment is related to all future issues, while language of department isrelated to four of them.Organizational variables, particularly decline, did notprove to be decisive factors in determining professors'perspectives. With theexception of sex, control variables were not consistently related to future issues. \ntRevised version of a paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the AmericanEducational Research Association,San Francisco,March 27-31,1989.The authorsthank Raymond Fournier,Faculty of Education,Université de Montreal, for hisassistance in data analysis. The authors also thank Darell Lewis of the University ofMinnesota and Clement Dassa of the Université de Montreal for their most valuablecomments.Comments and suggestions by two anonymous reviewers were very helpfulin revising the paper. All inaccuracies is needed to moreadequately account for professors'perspectives. \nDuring the past fifteen years, systems of h","cbCaily7PxA3RtaB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaily7PxA3RtaB","pdf",685610,25,"English","#
