She is sad to leave her friends: Baam the electric eel, John the crab king, and Ula the parrotfish. Mere has a special connection with her friends and can hear their farewell song. As they drive away, she misses the sea and her friends dearly. Upon arriving at her new home in the mountains, Mere is initially displeased. However, she soon discovers that she can hear a cricket chirping, suggesting that new friends and sounds await her in this unfamiliar environment. The story highlights themes of change, friendship, and the ability to find connection even in new and different surroundings. It emphasizes the importance of listening and being open to new experiences, even when facing sadness or loss. The narrative uses descriptive language to evoke the sensory experiences of the sea and the transition to a new home, encouraging readers to appreciate the subtle wonders of nature and the bonds of friendship.","The Friend of a Friend Shailesh Lal Honson Chan \nMere leaned on her dad and wished things were different. \nThey were moving to the mountains across the road. \n“The sea is slowly eating our land,” sighed Dad. \nBut Mere knew that the sea was not to blame. The sea had told her so . \nMere would miss her friends a lot. \nBaam the electric eel who enjoyed giving hera shock. \nJohn the crab king who always beat Mere in asideways race . \nAnd Ula the parrotfish who always brought Mere the freshest, whitest sand from goodness knows where . \nYes, she would miss these friends. Most of all, she would miss the sea . \n3 \nWhen Mere and her family left their home, she heard her friends’ farewell song. \nThe song Baam had sung when he left his island. \nThe song John had sung when the waves took his wife. \nThe very song Ula had sung when she missed her home. \nNow Mere heard the same sad song. \n5 \nAs they drove away, her friends voices grew softer and softer. \nUntil Mere could no longer hear them. She couldn’t hear Baam’s laughter, or Ula’s love songs. \nBut saddest of all, she could not hear her beloved friend, the sea . \nUp and around the mountain they drove . Everyone was excited except for Mere . Only she kept looking back. \nSearching for her friends. Missing her old home. \nThe truck stopped just outside their new house. \nMere hated it immediately. \nShe was met by the chirping of a cricket. She looked out the window, but just to wonder about her friends. \n“Where are the sea friends that only I can hear?” \nThen Mere realized she had heard a cricket. Chirp, chirp. \nThere it was again. How was this possible? Mere stood still and listened hard.","cbCaiaqW7KWpgwgu","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaqW7KWpgwgu","pdf",2503923,5,15,"English","en",105,"# The Friend of a Friend\n## Moving Away\n## Missing Friends\n## New Home","[{\"question\":\"Why is Mere moving away from her home?\",\"answer\":\"Mere is moving away because \\\"the sea is slowly eating our land.\\\"\"},{\"question\":\"Who are Mere's friends by the sea?\",\"answer\":\"Mere's friends by the sea are Baam the electric eel, John the crab king, and Ula the parrotfish.\"},{\"question\":\"What special ability does Mere have related to her friends?\",\"answer\":\"Mere can hear her friends' farewell song, which is a sad song that her friends have sung when they left their homes or missed their homes.\"}]",1783571685,23,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":86,"head_meta":88,"extra_data":90,"updated_unix":27},"the-friend-of-a-friend","",{"@graph":35,"@context":85},[36,53,68],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,47,50],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":46},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-friend-of-a-friend/48939/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":40,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-18","2026-07-09",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71,77,81],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"Why is Mere moving away from her home?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"Mere is moving away because \"the sea is slowly eating our land.\"","Answer",{"name":78,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":79},"Who are Mere's friends by the sea?",{"text":80,"@type":76},"Mere's friends by the sea are Baam the electric eel, John the crab king, and Ula the parrotfish.",{"name":82,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":83},"What special ability does Mere have related to her friends?",{"text":84,"@type":76},"Mere can hear her friends' farewell song, which is a sad song that her friends have sung when they left their homes or missed their homes.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":87,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":89,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":92},[93,96,100,104,108,113,118,123,128,131,135],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},90,"story-novel",{"id":46,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":127},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":126,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":130},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":132,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":133,"show_sort_weight":132,"slug":134},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":136,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":137,"show_sort_weight":20,"slug":138},19,"General","general"]
