His father, Tata, remarks on the gentle tide, but Mere carries a deeper unease, knowing the tide’s ebb and flow. He realizes his friends are departing, each with their own distinct personalities and fond memories associated with him. Baam, the lively dolphin, who only jumps for joy. John, the speedy crab, who always races him. And Ula, the wise turtle, who brings him the best seashells. The thought of being separated from them brings Mere great sadness, especially the thought of leaving the ocean. As they leave their home, Mere hears a farewell song, a song sung by each of his friends as they depart their island home. Baam sings as he leaves his island. John sings as the tide takes him. Ula sings as he reminisces of home. These are songs of sadness, and Mere hears them all. As they drive away, his voice fades with the song until it is barely audible. Mere can no longer hear Baam’s cheerful voice, nor Ula’s contemplative tone. But it is the silence of not hearing his beloved friend, the ocean, that saddens him most. They drive into the forest. Their joy is apparent, but Mere is lost in thought. He keeps looking back. He wants to see his friends. He reminisces about his old home. The truck stops near their new home. Mere dislikes something. He hears the crabs’ cries. Through the truck’s window, his thoughts drift to his friends. 'Where are my friends from the beach? Why am I the only one hearing them?' Then Mere realizes he hears the crabs’ cries. He hears them again. How can that be? Mere stops and listens intently. Mere is shocked to hear the crabs’ cries. He can hear other faint sounds too.","Na Veitokani Shailesh Lal Honson Chan \nE yadra cake o Mere qai diva me a tadra walega. \nRatou sa na toki i veidelana, ena tai ni gaunisala. \n“Sa kakana tiko vakamalua na ua,” e kaya enacegulevu o Tata. \nIa e kila o Mere ni sega ni bale vei ua .
