he feels nonetoo secure about the Founding Fathers and the framingand ratification of the Federal Constitution. He is no longercertain what the “enlightened”version of that story is,or evenwhether there is one. This is because,in the century and threequarters since the Constitution was written, our best thinkingon that subject has gone through two dramatically differentphases and is at this moment about to enter a third. \nAmericans in the nineteenth century, whenever they reviewedthe events of the founding, made reference to an Olympiangathering of wise and virtuous men who stood splendidly aboveall faction, ignored petty self-interest,and concerned themselvesonly with the freedom and well-being of their fellow-countrymen.This attitude toward the Fathers has actually never died out;u TA \ne \nit still tends to prevail in American history curricula right upthrough most of the secondary schools. But bright young peoplearriving at college have been regularly discovering, for nearlythe last fifty years, that in the innermost circle this was regardedas an old-fashioned,immensely oversimplified, and rather dewy-eyed view of the Founding Fathers and their work.Ever since \nJ.Allen Smith and Charles Beard wrote in the early years ofthe twentieth century, the“educated”picture of the Fathers hasbeen that of a group not of disinterested patriots but of hard-fisted conservatives who were looking out for their own interestsand those of their class.According to this worldlier view, thedocument which they wrote-and in which they embodied theseinterests-was hardly intended as a thrust toward popular anddemocratic government. On the contrary, its centralizing tend-encies all reflected the Fathers'distrust of the local and popularrule which had been too little restrained under the Articles ofConfederation. The authors of the Constitution representedthe privileged part of society.Naturally, then, their desire fora strong central government was, among other things,an effortto achieve solid national guarantees for the rights of property-rights not adequately protected under the Articles-and to obtainfor the propertied class (their own)a favored position under thenew government. \n1 \nThis \"revisionist\"point of view-that of the Founding Fathersas self-interested
