She frowned as she noticed the stray strands of hair that had escaped the hold of her hairband. She took the band off, pulled back her hair and secured it back into a ponytail. She preferred to let her curls fall naturally around her face, but she was used to pulling it back out of the way when on duty. The look was a way of creating a physical separation of her work and personal life. When the headband came off at the end of her shift, she felt a wave of relief wash over her as another day went by without major incident.  \nShe put the squad car into park and turned off the engine. Before she opened the door something caught her attention; the charm hanging from the rear-view mirror; a gift from her partner on their first day back on the beat together after a long absence. She gave it a tap for luck.  \nA knuckle rapped on the window on the driver ’s side, startling her. She turned to see her partner, Joel, waiting expectantly by the side of the car.  \n“Action’s out here, Officer,” he said playfully.  \nShe smiled as she composed herself, returning the rear-view mirror to its original position and opening the door to step outside.  \nHer eyes scanned the familiar streets of Detroit. The early morning sun cast long shadows, and the city was slowly stirring to life. She took a deep breath, before exhaling a cloud of breath into the crisp winter air. Despite the routine nature of her morning patrol, Alex always felt a sense of anticipation, as if the city might surprise her at any moment.  \nJoel was waiting with a steaming cup of coffee in each hand.“You okay, Alex?” he handed one to her.  \n“I’m fine,” Alex replied, the tone of her voice failing to hide that she was trying to convince herself as much as him. The truth was, Alex had good days and bad days. It had been almost a year since she had been  \nsuspended from the force; her poor judgement and reckless actions leading to Joel getting shot. He had made a full recovery, and it wasn’t too long before they were back on the beat together, but things hadn’t been the same since. Joel had to remind her to get out of her head from time to time, and that despite what their superiors said about who was at fault that day, it was the armed criminals that had put a bullet in him, not her. Despite being about ten years younger than Alex at twenty-nine, Joel had a mature head on his shoulders, plus a few years more experience over her on the force. There was a quality about Joel that made him the perfect partner for her.
