It began asa skirmish, which was innocent enough. And since no one actually saw the girl throw the plate that narrowly missed the enforcer ’s head, the point was still up for debate. She claimed it happened closer to seven and she hadn’t been throwing anything. He claimed it was closer to nine and perhaps the fog of war meant she couldn’t remember—he’d said that before he stomped off into the pines.  \nGiven who the combatants were, no one was actually surprised; they’d battled over lifetimes where neither one had won. Christan was an immortal enforcer, a legend of some repute. Lexi was the human girl with winter sunlight in her hair—except she wasn’t a human girl, not anymore. Her name was Galaxy in this lifetime. There’d been other lifetimes and other names, but she described herself as “me, now,” and liked to say it with fire in her eyes. When she did, she reminded the enforcer of Gaia, the warrior girl she’d been in the first life they shared. When she’d been innocent and courageous, tending her father ’s shaggy goats.  \nThere’d been other lives, short and uneventful, until the lifetime noone talked about ; she’d been a girl named Gemma in that lifetime, standing on a moon-shot road in Florence. It was one of those tragedies that never should have happened but did, and she didn’t want those memories. Neither did he, but more to the point, she didn’t think—because she was immortal, now—that Christan needed to “protect her,” which went a long way toward explaining why she “allegedly” threw the plates.  \nIn fact, everything had seemed quite normal in the beginning. They’d arrived late at night and holding hands like lovers, and for the first week, they remained inseparable. They cooked alone in their cabin despite the well-equipped lodge. Went for long walks. Marge and Robbie were there—they knew most of the secrets, since Marge was a human therapist and Robbie a gifted immortal healer. Both understood the combatants well enough, knew they were struggling with the changes that had occurred, a blood bond that altered their lives. The immortal world was like that, Lexi had learned, altering lives in ways humans never expected.  \nWhat she’d also learned was that the blood bond was filled with old magic and new consequences. There were gifts, if you could call them that, which came from Christan’s immortal side. Sort of like genetics, Marge explained, while Lexi said “more like breeding horses.”  \nChristan had his own issues. He was now able to destroy three-story buildings and had—in Zurich—which was causing another kind of problem, the kind he didn’t want or need but was likely to be forced upon him.
