The sound hung in the sky, like a final judgement, stark as the light of the full moon high in the south. The eleventh had become the twelfth, and for the small company of men – less than two hundred, veterans of the Great War not yet a year past – gathered in the cemetery just outside the village of Ronchi, it was a day of reckoning. The murmur of their few, nervous words was barely to be heard over the wind sighing through the Roman cypresses flanking the tombs and gravestones, proud and erect as the seven officers who formed the nucleus of the little band. The seven smoked their cigarettes in silence, casting impatient glances at the road, suspicious looks at the moon, as though its glare would expose them to unfriendly eyes . They were still within Italy’s borders, and the locals were sympathetic; but mutiny was mutiny.  \nJust up the road, in a hastily-arranged billet in the farmhouse of a local veteran, slept the man in whom they had placed all their hopes, on whom they were gambling their futures, perhaps their lives: the saviour. They had all of them signed the letter begging him to come and lead them in their desperate cause . And he had come . Famous as he was, a legend in such disparate worlds as the military and the arts, the battlefield and the stage, the trenches and the perfumed boudoir, he had come . Unfortunately he had taken ill on the way, and slept now fitfully, feverish, on four tables pushed together in a peasant’s kitchen, swaddled in the damask blankets he had piled into his red sports-car before setting out from Venice for the eastern frontier, arriving at last well after dark.
