It opens with the Nibelungen Song and describes the saga as a sweeping chain of sin and expiation, moving from a bright beginning to gloomy tragedy. The narrative then sets the stage in Worms, recounting Siegfried’s deeds, courtly joy, and the rivalries that sour and the overwhelming con-catenation of sin and expiation in the lives ofthe Recken and Frauen of the NibelungenLegend. That naive singer has remained name-less and unknown, who about the end of the12th century wrote down this legend in poeticform, thus preserving forever our most preciousrelic of Germanic Folksepic.A powerful story itis of sin and suffering:corresponding to theworld itself and just as the primitive mind of apeople loves to represent it.The story beginsas a lovely idyll but ends in gloomy tragedy. \nThe ancient Rhenish town of Worms wasduring the great migrations the seat of authorityof the Burgundian invaders,an east Germanicstock.During the glorious reign of KingGunther there appears, attracted by the beautyof Chriemhild the king's sister,a young hero,Siegfried,by loyalty to hisoverlord, and rendered invisible by magic, conquers for him the redoubtable Brunhild, theproud queen of the island kingdom of Isenland(Iceland)and compels her to wed King Gunther. As a reward Siegfried receives the hand ofChriemhild. In the fulness of his heart the heropresents to Chriemhild as a marriage gift, theNibelungen Hoard, which he had gained in hisearly years from the sons of the king of theNibelungen and from Dwarf Alberich theguardian of the treasure. \nJoy reigns in the king's court at Worms, butit was not shared by all.Besides Chriemhildthere was another secretly drawn towards thehero, and in Brunhild's heart the bridal hap-piness of Chriemhild awakens such envy thatsoon no friendly word passes between thewomen. They become estranged and one day herbad feeling leads Brunhild to harsh words.Thenalas,Chriemhild gave unbridled licence to hertongue. In her rash insolence she represents toBrunhild that it was not Gunther but Siegfriedwho formerly overcame her.As proof of thisshe produces the ring and girdle which Sieg-fried had taken on that night from the powerfulBrunhild, and which he had presented toChriemhild. With fierce haughtiness Chriemhildtaunts her opponent
