gave his heart and his life to the writing ofsports but above and beyond that, and often at the top of one of hisfamous sports columns,he put his soul in verse. He loved poets andpoetry. He reveled in rhymes.Keats and Shelley,Tennyson and Swin-burne,Housman and Masefield were his heroes.Kipling was his idol.He often borrowed the verse forms and the rhyme schemes of hisfavorites for sportive purposes,to brighten a dull day, perhaps,or addlustre to a stirring story.Much of this was ephemeral. It touched onthe topic of the day and its significance vanished overnight. But therewere other days when the verses atop the column dealt with the thingsthat were close to the heart and deep in the soul of Grantland Rice. These were too good to be lost in yesterday's—or yesteryear’s—news-paper.They have been reclaimed here.In them the reader will findwhat Keats said was all that we needed to know on earth—Beauty andTruth. They vary in mood, tone and tempo but they join in revealingthe whole man that was Grantland Rice—athlete,sportswriter,phi-losopher,soldier,poet,husband,father and the finest friend any of usshall ever know.Making these selections was a labor of love and agreat joy because going through the dusty clippings brought backmyriad memories of happy days with a man who did more than anyone else to make them so for all around him.At his death it could havebeen written of him as his idol,Kipling, wrote of another: \nE'en as he trod that day to God,so walked he from his birth,In simpleness and gentleness and honor and clean mirth. \nGrantland Rice lies buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in New YorkCity. He still lives in the hearts of his friends and in the verse in thisbook. \nJoHN KIERAN
