refugees who lived in theshabby Hotel International off the AvenueWagram, not far from the Arc de Triomphewith its“faint, lonely flame on the tomb ofthe unknown soldier, which looked like thelast grave of mankind in the midst of nightand loneliness.\"At the International livesRavic,a surgeon,an exile who has graduatedfrom the concentration camp.It is throughRavic's eyes,at once clear and tormented, that we watch the spectacle of a dyingEurope.Out of the horror of his experience(which, let us remember,is the experience, more or less,of one hundred million Euro-peans alive today)he has emerged with littleexcept his superb professional skill and anobsessive, morally proper lust to revenge him-self on the Gestapo sadist who had killed inhim almost everything but the simple desireto persist.Ravic, though projected with skilland power as a three-dimensional and uniquecharacter, bears about him also a symbolicatmosphere:he is Europe, clinging to itsglorious tradition of intelligence and reason, but at heart sick, bitter and defeated. He iswhat the Germans have made out of a con-tinent.Hc is the great and horrifying proofthat in the deepest sense they have won thewar. \nDURING the past fewyears I have read agreat many currentnovels,of which onlya small minority werewritten by grown-upmen and women.Among this smallminority Erich MariaRemarque's Arch of \nCLIF'TON FADIMAN \nTriumph—to my mind his finest book-takesa high place. It is adult and intelligent, and,if disillusioned, the disillusionment is notthe product of easy cynicism, but comes outof a mature sense of the sadness of contem-porary life. The Book-of-the-Month Clubjudges feel themselves fortunate in beingable to offer the members of the Club anovel at once exciting, craftsmanlike andreflective.Stamped with the die of its era,it cannot be termed a great book, but it isassuredly a notable one,and it representsan extraordinary advance over its author’sprevious efforts. \nThe scene is the Right Bank of Paris in1938-39,during the months just before theoutbreak of the Second German War AgainstMankind, when all Europe waited in uneasyterror, like beasts with a dim foreknowledgeof the slaughterhouse. Some had alreadybeen in the slaughterhouse and had escaped, \nInto his life drifts Joan Madou,a mediocreactress, neurotic, fatal,a succubus. The last \nthing Ravic wants is love. But it is the firstthing, the last thing and all the things Joanwants.Between then there grows up astrange, agonizing kind of passion, bringinghappiness to neither,a passion truly andterribly of our time, very un-American in itsmorbid iridescence, its partial dependenceon long, almost Russian conversations, itsremoteness from sentimentality. \nThe love-relation between Ravic and Joanwhich,of course, develops disastrously(thereare no happy endings,in Europe today)isparalleled by a hate-theme which developsfortunately. That is to say,Ravic plans andcarries out the killing of his Gestapo torturerin a series of scenes and interviews of mount-ing tension, ending in a climax of superbdrama","cbCaiaz69ofenRNA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaz69ofenRNA","pdf",2121591,28,"English","# THE February sELECTION\n##
