He owned a large piece of land. The land was very fertile. He planted several crops on it. When he harvested his crops, he shared some to friends. He kept part to feed his family, and sold another part. This gave him a lot of money. He was the richest man in the village.  \nHe bought donkeys, horses and cows to help work his land. Work on his land was done faster . He also saved money by not paying many labourers . This is how he grew richer and richer as the years went by.  \nOne day his friend, Kanjo, visited him. He was glad that his friend, the farmer, harvested so many crops. He thought that Kaavi could even have many more crops.  \n\"You can grow even richer from the same land,\" he told Kaavi.  \n\"Oh! What can I do?\" Kaavi asked. One could tell, from his voice, that he was very interested to know and to put this new idea to use .  \n\"It will make me very rich,\" he thought.  \n\"You must closely follow the ideas I will tell you,\" Kanjo warned.  \nKaavi, the farmer, was very ready to follow his friend's advice . He very much wanted to harvest a large quantity of crops from his land.  \nKanjo took out some papers from his bag. Using them, he advised his friend, the farmer, to buy certain chemicals from the market.  \n\"These chemicals will help kill all the weeds,\" he told the farmer.  \n\"And, you will no longer need to use people to clear the land,\" he added.  \nWhat he did not tell him was the fact that they kill all life in the soil.  \n\"Work done by men takes more time . The grass grows faster after clearing, and you spend too much money to pay labourers,\" Kanjo advised.  \n\"When you spray chemicals, however, the grass dries faster and it takes a longer time for new grass to grow . \"  \nKaavi, the farmer, listened to him with interest.  \nWhen his friend, Kanjo, left him, Kaavi quickly went and bought the new material. The next day, while following the advice of Kanjo, he sprayed his land. He was happy with the result. All the grass dried out in a very short time.  \nHe sent for a larger quantity of the chemical. He wanted to have much of it in store.  \nHis friend Kanjo had also given him a second advice. He bought chemical fertilizer and used it on the farm .  \nHe and his family realized that his crops had grown very well, more than before. He harvested a large amount of crops. This made him to buy and use more chemicals and fertilizer on his farm.  \nAs time went on, his land began to fail him. He noticed that he could no more harvest as much as he used to.  \n\"May be I did not use much chemical,\" Kaavi thought.  \nBut, as he increased the amount of chemicals, he no longer harvested as much as he wanted.
