\nhi \nThe Fallen Victor \nC.R.GIBSON·1658·35 \n# The Fallen Victor\n\nJudges 13-16 \nText by G.Perona \nTranslated and adapted by Norah SmaridgeIllustrations by C.Rota \nThe story of Samson,an Israelite of the Tribe of Dan,is strange and tragic.God chose him to help hispeople in their long struggle with the neighboringPhilistines. For forty years the Philistines had livedon the plain along the sea between Gaza and MountCarmel. They knew where to find iron and how tomake weapons and war chariots, but they took care tokeep this knowledge a secret from the Israelites.Living in the constant fear of the Philistines, theIsraelites had become discouraged and had begun tolose faith in God. \nAmong the Israelites of the Tribe of Dan was acouple,Manoah and his wife. They lived in Zorah, inthe valley of Sorek.God had not blessed them withchildren and they had lost hope of having a son. \nOne day an angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’swife. He said,“God is about to give you a son.His hairmust never be cut,for he will be a Nazirite from themoment of his birth.”The Nazirites were consecratedto God.They fasted and prayed and wore their hairlong as a sign of their consecration. They believed \nthat it was disrespectful to the Lord to cut the hairwhich He caused to grow on their heads. \nWhat the angel said came true.In the course of time,Manoah's wife bore a son whom they named Samson. The little boy was blessed by God and the Holy Spiritwatched over him. \nSamson grew into a daring and independent youth. He led the life of a Nazirite and let his hair grow long. When he was fully grown, the Holy Spirit gave him aspecial mission. He was to protect his people fromthe Philistines and bring them back to faith in God. \nOne day Samson journeyed to Timnah,a region in \nthe hill country of Judah. There he saw a beautifulPhilistine maiden. On his return home he told hisfatherand mother,\"I have seen a Philistine maiden inTimnah.I want you to get her for me to be my wife.”In those days it was the custom for parents to choosethe young women whom their sons would marry. \nSamson's parents were very much disturbed.\"Canyou not find a wife among your own people?\"theyasked.“Why must you choose a daughter of thePhilistines? You know that it is against our Law totake a wife who does not believe in the Lord.” \nBut Samson insisted that he wanted the Philistinemaiden.“Get her for me,\"he said,\"because she is theone I must have.”His parents did not know that this \nwas the Lord's will.Godmeant to give Samsonan opportunity to cometo blows with thePhilistines. \nAt last Samson's parentsgave way to him.Theyjourneyed to Timnah totalk with the parents of \nthe maiden, and Samsonwent ahead of them.Ashe reached the vineyardoutside of the city wherethe maiden lived, ayoung lion leaped uponhim, roaring fiercely. \nThe Holy Spirit came to Samson's aid and gave himstrength. With his bare hands,Samson tore the lion topieces as easily as if it were a tender young goat.Buthe said nothing to his parents about what he haddone. \nWhen he saw her for the second time,Samson lovedthe Philistine maiden more than ever.It was agreedthat he should marry her,and he and his parents thenreturned to their home. \nAfter some time,Samson journeyed to Timnah towed the maiden. On the way,he looked for the placewhere he had killed the lion.He found its carcass witha swarm of bees inside it and a honeycomb rich inhoney. \nSamson scooped some of the precious honey into hishands and ate it as he made his way along. When hejoined his father and mother, who were also going toTimnah for the wedding,he gave them some of thehoney. But he did not tell them that he had taken itfrom the carcass of a wild beast. \nAs was the custom in those times,Samson gave agreat feast in the bride's home.It was part of themarriage ceremony and lasted for seven days.Everyone made merry. They sang and danced, toldtales and asked riddles. \nThirty young men of the Philistines were among the \nSo Samson said,“Out of the eatercame someth","cbCaircjrLaWIMSJ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaircjrLaWIMSJ","pdf",2922187,"English","# The Fallen Victor\n##
