Faith of a Scientist, contains a selectionof the writings of Dr.Eyring taken from a larger book ofthe same name. Each of the writings now included is com-plete,and is not an abridgement or a condensation \nBelievers and atheists alike are prone to muddy thewaters of truth in ill-informed discussions on the subject ofscience and religion. It is refreshing therefore when a scientistof Dr.Eyring's eminence undertakes from the vantage pointof his training and observation to outline his views—in thiscase his deep-seated convictions —on the matter. \nThe theme of this collection of Dr.Eyring's writingsmay be simply and briefly expressed. It is that, disregardingthe theories and conjectures of the advocates on either side, true science and true religion are and must always be incomplete harmony;that this must be so because truth isconsistent —no one truth can conflict with another truth;and that the existence of a loving, personal God who offersa beneficent plan for man's eternal progression is not onlyconsistent with scientific truth but is for Dr.Eyring as mucha reality as any of the findings of science. \nThe author has sustained this theme throughout a life-time of activity in both scientific and religious fields.Havingobtained a B.S.degree in Mining Engineering and an M.S.in Metallurgical Engineering,he earned his Ph.D.in chem-istry in 1927 at the University of California. His accomplish-ments in the field of chemistry have won him a world-widereputation in scientific circles and are indicated in an im-pressive record of awards and other professional recognition. These are too numerous to list here but they include elevenhonorary doctoral degrees;presidency of the AmericanChemical Society(1963)and of the American Association \nviii \nfor the Advancement of Science(1965);and the nation'stop scientific honor, the National Medal of Science, presentedby President Lyndon B.Johnson in February 1967.Fortwenty years dean of the graduate school at the Universityof Utah,he is now retired from that office but retains hisposition at that University as professor of chemistry andprofessor of metallurgy. \nWith all these professional activities he has found timeto raise a family and serve in The Church of Jesus Christof Latter-day Saints,of which he is an outstanding anddedicated member. His callings have included those ofbranch and district president, and he has since 1946 beena member of the general board of the Deseret Sunday SchoolUnion. He and his wife, the former Mildred Bennion, weremarried in the Salt Lake Temple in 1928 and are the parentsof three sons, all of whom are now(1969)bishops. \nThus,Dr.Eyring not only uses his training and talentsto contribute to the advance of science but,as a man ofdeep faith in God,he also gives wholehearted allegiance tothe principles of revealed religion. This combination,to-gether with his cogency of thought and facility of expression, has produced in The Faith of a Scientist a book which willstrengthen the faith of all lovers of truth. \nThe Publishers \nMay,1969","cbCaiu0KuQ680qwf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiu0KuQ680qwf","pdf",2488849,68,"English","# Preface\n# Science and Faith\n#
