This essay will examine the evolving role of DEI in higher education through a Southern lens, tracing its development alongside pivotal historical events such as desegregation, racism, and affirmative action. Special attention is given to contemporary sociopolitical contexts in the SACSA region, where ongoing debates and restrictions shape both policy and practice for student affairs professionals. Asthe disclosure of DEI evolves into a more comprehensive framework, such as justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), this essay highlights the need for intentional advocacy and dialogue among practitioners and educational leaders in the South. By critically analyzing past and present practices while anticipating future challenges, this work aims to equip student affairs professionals with the knowledge and recommendations to foster equitable, inclusive, and supportive environments for diverse student populations in the region. \nKeywords: Student Affairs, DEI, diversity, equity, inclusion, higher education, Texas, JEDI, diverse, CRT, justice, desegregation, college, practitioners, policies, South \nPlease direct inquires about this manuscript to: Tihirah Ruffin, M.Ed., [tihirahruffin@gmail.com](tihirahruffin@gmail.com). \nCollege Student Affairs Journal, Volume 43(2), pp. 120-124 ISSN 2381-2338 \nCopyright 2025 Southern Association for College Student Affairs All rights of reproduction in any form reserved. \n121 College Student Affairs Journal Vol. 43, No.2, 2025 \nT \nhe principles of DEI have been integral to the mission of higher education, and their importance is only growing as colleges and universities seek to foster more \nenvironments where all students, regardless of their background, have a sense of belonging and feel supported during their collegiate journey. In recent years, especially in response to high-profile cases of racial injustice, many colleges and universities have reevaluated their policies and practices, resulting in the expansion of DEI initiatives to address systemic inequities (Abrica & Oliver, 2024) . DEI is rooted in an ethnic of care that is both cultural and political, grounded in the lived experiences of students and their communities. Yet, the current administration has cast this work as a dander and a threat, advancing an agenda of historical amnesia that seeks to erase collective memory and disconnect us (Rodriguez-Campo, 2025) . According to the Pew Research Center’s projections incorporating U.S. Census base data from 2005, by mid-century, racial and ethnic minorities will makeup half of the U.S. population (Pew Research Center, 2008) . \nMany states and cities are already experiencing these demographic shifts (Hurtado, 2007). The political climate in states like Texas has placed DEI initiatives under growing pressure. Recent legislative actions, such as the Senate Bill 17 (2023) and the House Bill 3979 (2021), have intensified this scrutiny. In response, some colleges and universities have renamed or eliminated DEI programming, centers, and initiatives. These changes have sparked significant debates about the future of DEI in Texas’s higher education. They have also raised questions about the role of such programs in addressing systemic inequalities and fostering diverse and inclusive campus culture.
