Margarita Shalina ran a tight consignment section in the back and sold my side-stapled book. Maybe I used Papyrus font for the title. Then I read the “like”piece on WNYC radio in 1998 thanks to producer Gene Bryan Johnson. In 2003 an independent press published an edition of the book with nineteen entries. This 2018 edition is expanded further to include some forty main entries (plus subordinate categories). By entries I mean either equations (x = y) or taxonomies of flexible bugbears (actually, like, so, sorry, whatever) . \nSo (“inelegant transition so”) what’s changed? We still say like but I think there’s been a downtick, whether because character restrictions have us editing our words or because the mincing posturing of like isn’t as popular a stance.
