variedthat to add to their number may well seem superfluous.Fortunately for the present editors the responsibility forattempting this does not rest with them.In a series ofcommentaries on the New Testament it was impossiblethat the Epistle to the Romans should not be includedand should not hold a prominent place.There are fewbooks which it is more difficult to exhaust and few inregard to which there is more to be gained from renewedinterpretation by different minds working under differentconditions.If it is a historical fact that the spiritualrevivals of Christendom have been usually associated withcloser study of the Bible,this would be true in an eminentdegree of the Epistle to the Romans.The editors areunder no illusion as to the value of their own special con-tribution,and they will be well content that it should findits proper level and be assimilated or left behind as itdeserves.  \nPerhaps the nearest approach to anything at all dis-tinctive in the present edition would be(1)the distributionof the subject-matter of the commentary,(2)the attemptto furnish an interpretation of the Epistle which might bedescribed as historical.  \nSome experience in teaching has shown that if a difficult  \nPREFACE  \nEpistle like the Romans is really to be understood andgrasped at once as a whole and in its parts,the argumentshould be presented in several different ways and on severaldifferent scales at the same time.And it is an advantagewhen the matter of a commentary can be so broken up thatby means of headlines,headings to sections,summaries,paraphrases,and large and small print notes,the readermay not either lose the main thread of the argument in thecrowd of details,or slur over details in seeking to obtaina general idea.While we are upon this subject,we mayexplain that the principle which has guided the choice oflarge and small print for the notes and longer discussionsis not exactly that of greater or less importance,but ratherthat of greater or less directness of bearing upon theexegesis of the text.This principle may not be carriedout with perfect uniformity:it was an experiment theeffect of which could not always be judged until
