Colonialism is treated as a mode of production that distorted indigenous socio-economic structures and produced a distinct political alliance culminating in the creation of the F.L.N. The study examines independence and the consolidation of a new power structure through class antagonisms, interpreting Algerian socialism as a struggle between the petite bourgeoisie and technocracy while assessing the roles of party, bureaucracy, and ideology.","# The Emergence ofClasses in Algeria\n\nA Study of Colonialism andSocio-Political Change \nMarnia Lazreg \n| The Emergence of Classes Shankman,Migration and Underdevelopment:The Case of Western Samoa \nThis book seeks to determine the impact of colonialism on the evo-lution of social classes in Algeria from 1830 to the present, and toanalyze the relationship between classes and politicaland economicdevelopment.Colonialism is viewed as a mode of production whichresulted in the distortion of the indigenous socio-economic configu-rations and led to a particular form of political alliance culminatingin the creation of the F.L.N.Theevolution of the latter, the achieve-ment of independence, and the establishment of a new power struc-ture are examined in the light of class antagonisms. The Algerianform of socialism is interpreted as the outcome of the struggle be-tween the petite bourgeoisie and the technocracy. The role of theParty,of the bureaucracy, and of ideology in a selected number ofpolitical measures indicated the existence of a specific pattern ofsocial development which may not be grasped by the conventionaltools of analysis. The major conclusion of the book is that societiessuch as Algeria present the observer with a reality for which a newmode of theorizing is needed. \nMarnia Lazreg was
