She blinked down at the bottom of her cup, where dark brown \nleaves curved like a bony head. Two gaps of white porcelain stared \nback as eyes, above a hole for a nose. It was a skull, irrefutably. \nElinor looked up.“Did I swirl my cup counterclockwise?” \nShe addressed the question to the room in general, which contained her soon-to-be-mother-in-law, the Dowager Countess of Beresford, who was arrayed in a stately fashion upon an armchair, and Miss Aldreda Zooth, who was perched on a whorl of decorative wood on the mantlepiece. Aldreda was a vampiri, a bat shape-shifter the size of a human hand, and cannily positioned next to the clock, should she need to take cover. It was late in the evening, however, and tea already served, so the servants were unlikely to walk in. \nThe heat of the fire had caused Aldreda to fling off her black shawl, revealing her white, miniature shoulders. “I didn’t notice you doing so. Why?” She cast an acute look at Elinor ’s worried expression. “Are you concerned about absentminded tasseomancy?” \nThe Dowager looked up with interest from her book of poetry.“Reading tea leaves? How exciting! What does it say?” \nElinor licked her lips.“It says…death.” \n“Nonsense,” said Aldreda, but she stood up to see. \nElinor carried the cup across, the porcelain now cool against her palm. Aldreda examined the bottom in silence, then Elinor took it to the Dowager, who drew in a sharp breath. \nThere was a moment’s uneasy silence. \n“See,” said Elinor.“You cannot deny it is a skull.”Aldreda wrinkled her nose.“Cou","cbCaiiYzXLftEafb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiiYzXLftEafb","pdf",2826135,321,"English","en",105,"# Contents\n## In which death appears\n## In which clothing is uncharacteristic\n## In which pouring tea proves fatal\n## In which travel plans prove contentious\n## In which dusk brings bad news\n## In which Beresford’s rank is elevated\n## In which a vigileye bowl is bothersome\n## In which a mobcap is cast aside\n## In which a duke encroaches\n## In which Elinor eavesdrops\n## In which the newlyweds go for a stroll\n## In which petticoats are pestiferous\n## In which Jaq offers a theory\n## In which Elinor plays craken\n## In which Aldreda resists temptation\n## In which a seal provides a seal\n## In which a duke is impervious\n## In which siblings go on a jaunt\n## In which Aldreda employs drapery to good effect\n## In which a promenade is distasteful\n## In which suspicion turns about\n## In which a fireplace glows\n## In which the wedded couple quarrel\n## In which Pags causes a scene\n## In which Perry covets a moustache\n## In which a map is useless\n## In which a search is desperate\n## In which waves cover the sound of plotting\n## In which Aldreda imitates a leaf\n## In which Elinor is willing to sacrifice tea\n## In which a name is revealed","[{\"question\":\"What omen does Elinor see in her tea leaves before her wedding?\",\"answer\":\"Elinor believes she sees a skull in the bottom of her cup, which she interprets as a death omen.
