and about two-thirds of the photographs col-lected by Sir Kenneth Clark. Its continuation by him was madeimpossible through pressure of work connected with the war and withhis approval I was asked by the publishers to undertake it.It is largelybased,as all work on Leonardo's drawings must be,on Sir KennethClark's Catalogue of the Drawings at Windsor Castle, which establisheda firm basis for the chronology of the drawings. \nThe arrangement of the drawings in groups, roughly according tothe subjects represented,is part of the original scheme which I havetaken over.Within these subject groups however the arrangement isas far as possible chronological,so that the reader is able to followLeonardo's development as a draughtsman of horses for example(insection III)from the time of the Adoration in I48o down to the periodof the Trivulzio monument,I508-II.The first two sections,'DraperyStudies and Early Madonnas'and ‘Adorations',carry with themimplications of date.Section VI‘Compositions'has also a chrono-logical bias in that it includes only the compositions of Leonardo'smaturity after his removal to Milan in I48r-82.A disadvantage of thearrangement lies in the separation from one another of studies for thesame composition and also in some cases the separation of drawings onthe front and back of the same sheet.Nor is it possible,or indeeddesirable,to carry through the division into subjects with logical com-pleteness.It will however be apparent that Leonardo's multifariousinterests are better treated separately and that on the whole the drawingsfall naturally into such subject groups.A strictly chronological arrange-ment reveals an extraordinary jumble of ideas and plans in Leonardo'smind, which it is confusing and at times irritating to try and disentangle. He is certainly an artist whose drawings, like his writings, need carefulediting. \nWar conditions have to a certain extent interfered with the complete-ness and accuracy of the work.I was prevented by the outbreak of warfrom visiting the Leonardo exhibition in Milan and I have not seen thecatalogue.Since that time it has been impossible to study any of thedrawings in foreign collections in the original.I have had under my","cbCaisFeruCys1U4","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisFeruCys1U4","pdf",45697837,497,"English","# Preface\n# Contents\n## List of Dates in Leonardo's Life\n##
