\"FinestAmerican children's book written in the Catholic tradi-tion\"was made in Washington in June at a tea in thepatio of the Music Auditorium of the Catholic Universityof America, presided over by the Rector of the University.the Right Reverend Monsignor P.J.McCormick.The Awardwas made to Alfred Noyes for his imaginative story.\"TheSecret of Pooduck Island'and Mr.Joseph Lippincoft,pub-lisher of the book, accepted the award for Doctor Noyes \nwho was in California and unable to be present. The Reverend Harold C.Gardiner,S.J.,Director of Pro Parvulis, gave the following citation as he pre-sented the handsome silver medal to Mr.Lippincott: \n\"Because its style is marked by a vivid characterization and a depth ofspiritual insight that hallmark the author as a fine literary craftsman;becauseits Americanism is genuine and delicately interwoven with religious valuesthat early Catholic missionaries planted at the roots of American life;becausethroughout the story there is an allegorical treatment of family life that re-flects Catholic ideals and teachings:because the book meets the test thatany good juvenile book must face —namely, that it may be read with enjoy-ment by young and old alike —and meets that test superbly;because theauthor has so successfully interspersed the acknowledged beauty of his poetryamong the pages of a simple, yet most imaginative prose style;because thetheme, which is at once one of mystery and high spiritual purpose,is so re-dolent of the beauty and ideals of Catholic life, the judges have determinedthat the Third Annual Downey Award for the finest American children's bookwritten in the Catholic tradition, shall, for the year 1943,be awarded to 'TheSecret of Pooduck Island\"by Alfred Noyes. \n\"The Secret of Pooduck Island\"is Alfred Noyes'first story for children. It is a tale of a boy and his strange adventures on a little island off the coastof Maine.Mr.Lippincott talked briefly and very deligh+fully and informallyof Doctor Noyes, and the greatness of his place in the literafure of our time. \nFather Gardiner in his address brought out that this year the Awardwhich is always made to an author whose book was published in the year pre-ceding the year of award,by a Committee of three using two-vote ballots(one vote from teachers, one vote from children)sent in by schools throughout \nthe country, had distinguished runners-up.Among them were Sigrid Undset's\"Sigurd and His Brave Companions\",Antoine de Saint-Exupery's \"The Lit+lePrince\"and Ann Roos'\"Man of Molokai.\"The judges were Dr.Francis A.Mullin.head of the Department of Library Science at The Catholic Universityof America,Mr.Phillips Temple,Librarian of The Riggs Library at George-town University, and Miss Mary Kiely of Pro Parvulis. When the story wasfirst selected on its publication for young readers of Pro Parvulis Book Club,\"The Herald\"said,\"It's a new sort of American magic.Children willlove it.\"And children did love it as the balloting disclosed. \nMonsignor McCormick closed the formal address in the Music Buildingwith an invitation to all present to be the guests of the University at a tea inthe patio.June in Washington is a month of flowers and warm, summer weath-er,and the tea in the pretty patio was a particularly festive event. The fac-ulty of The Library Science Department of The University welcomed
