Frankl’s framework of meaning. The work argues that human life includes somatic, mental, and spiritual dimensions, and that the search for meaning is a central human drive rather than mere pathology. It introduces “will-to-meaning” and explains how existential frustration can develop into noögenic neurosis. Using the concentration camp experience and clinical concepts, it positions logotherapy as complementary treatment focused on spiritual distress and personal value realization.","The Doctor and the Soul \nFROM PSYCHOTHERAPY TO LOGOTHERAPY \nVIKTOR E. Another psychiatrist complains that nowadays too many patients come to the medical man with problems which should really be put to a priest. \nPatients are constantly coming to us with problems such as, what is the meaning of their lives. It is not that we doctors attempt to carry philosophy over into medicine, although we are often accused of doing so; the patients themselves bring us philosophical problems. The individual doctor, confronted with such problems, may well be driven into a corner. But medicine, and psychiatry in particular, has thereby been compelled to cope with a new field. \nThe doctor can still make things easy for himself if he wishes. He can, for instance, take refuge in psychology by pretending that the spiritual distress of a human being who is looking for a meaning to his existence is nothing but a pathological symptom. \nMan lives in three dimensions: the somatic, the mental, and the spiritual. The spiritual dimension cannot be ignored, for it is what makes us human. To be concerned about the meaning of life is not necessarily a sign of disease or of neurosis. It may be; but then again, spiritual agony may have very little connection with a disease of the psyche. The proper diagnosis can be made only by someone who can see the spiritual side of man. \nPsychoanalysis speaks of the pleasure principle, individual psychology of status drive. The pleasure principle might be termed the will-to-pleasure; the status drive is equivalent to the will-to-power. But where do we hear of that which most deeply inspires man; where is the innate desire to give as much meaning as possible to one’s life, to actualize as many values as possible – what I should like to call the will-to-meaning? \nThis will-to-meaning is the most human phenomenon of all, since an animal certainly never worries about the meaning of its existence. Yet psychotherapy would turn this will-to-meaning into a human frailty, a neurotic complex. A therapist who ignores man’s spiritual side, and is thus \nforced to ignore the will-to-meaning, is giving away one of his most valuable assets. For it is to this will that a psychotherapist should appeal. Again and again we have seen that an appeal to continue life, to survive the most unfavourable conditions, can be made only when such survival appears to have a meaning. That meaning must be specific and personal, a meaning which can be realized by this one person alone. For we must never forget that every man is unique in the universe. \nI remember my dilemma in a concentration camp when faced with aman and a woman who were close to suicide; both had told me that they expected nothing more from life. I asked both my fellow prisoners whether the question was really what we expected from life. Was it not, rather, what life was expecting from us? I suggested that life was awaiting something from them. In fact the woman was being awaited by her child abroad, and the man had a series of books which he had begun to write and publish but had not yet finis","cbCaiiMwOFGWF8sq","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiiMwOFGWF8sq","pdf",1266591,5,1,231,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## From Psychotherapy to Logotherapy\n## From Psychoanalysis to Existential Analysis\n## Logotherapy as a Psychotherapeutic Technique\n## From Secular Confession to Medical Ministry","[{\"question\":\"What does Frankl mean by the “will-to-meaning”?\",\"answer\":\"He describes it as the innate human desire to give life meaning and to actualize values.
