\nVol 47 No7■ Graymoor Ecumenical &Interreligious Institute ■ July/August 2018A Ministry of the Franciscan Friars ofthe Atonement \n# The Diaconate and Diakonia-EcumenicalConvergence and Practice\n\nBy David Carter \nThe three main tasks of God's church have sometimesbeen defined as leiturgia or worship,martyria(wit-ness)and diakonia(service, particularly of the poorand marginalized).Much attention has been given ecumeni-cally to worship, particularly in terms ofits twin nodalpoints, the Word and the sacrament of the eucharist.Desire forcommon witness to the non-Christian world was at the veryheart of the international Missionary Conference of 1910,which marked the beginning of the modern EcumenicalMovement as known today.Rather less attention was givento the specific nature of diakonia until more recent yearseven though the early life and work movement, with its twogreat inter-war conferences, certainly encouraged growth inunity through experience of common service and witnesson social justice. \ntechnically,Anglican or Protestant deacons wishing toserve in the Roman Catholic diaconate would have to bere-ordained,there is relatively little that they do that cannotalso be done by lay folk suitably approved. The sacramentof baptism can be conferred by a lay person. In Catholictheology,it is the spouses who minister the sacrament ofmarriage to each other, the priest or deacon witness beingonly such even if his presence is required by canons.Preaching in both the Anglican and Protestant churches canbe done by duly licensed lay preachers \nWhy has there been, more recently,so much more dis-cussion ecumenically of diaconal ministry as representedand focused by those set aside and commissioned/ordainedby churches for facilitating that vital aspect of its missionin the world? There are,I think two sets of reasons, thefirst relating to the need of the Church to connect with theconcerns of the world and to carry on the healing, caringand compassionate ministry of Christ in a rapidly changingbut still desperately needy world. The other relates to thegrowing ecumenical awareness of the extraordinary way inwhich the ministry of deacons has developed and,for longperiods, has been rather neglected and eclipsed particularlyin the western Church, thus harming its ability to under-stand and relate meaningfully to the needs of the world. \nMuch more recently, fruitful attention has been given tothe nature of the Church's diakonia in a needy world and,in particular to the ministry of deacons within that context. There has,as I hope to show, been an extraordinary degreeof convergence on the fact that the ministry of deacons isto focus, enable and encourage the wider ministry of allthe people of God in such works of mercy, compassion andservice of the poor that they may be enabled to performwithin their local context and,in some cases more widelybeyond it.In some respects the cooperation of those invarious forms of diaconal ministry across the ecumenicalspectrum has been helped by the fact that the thorny ques-tion of the validity or otherwise of orders does not impedesharing by deacons to the same extent that is the case forpresbyteral or episcopal ministries. While it is true that, \ncontinued on page 2 \nMr.David Carter is a church historian and has been amember of the British Catholic-Methodist dialogue
